As feature-rich as the Google Photos app is, since it launched years ago tablet users have been limited to a blown-up UI that is better suited to the mobiles it was originally designed for. Thankfully, Google has finally optimized the Photos app for both tablets and Chromebooks with the latest app update bringing a revamped UI that makes better use of the increased real estate.
Google Photos’ new, optimized tablet layout adds a search field to the top bar where it will sit next to the Profile image and Cast button on small-to-medium-sized devices and on the left with a prompt or Upload button (that opens the Files app) on larger devices.
Search is renamed to “Explore” on tablets, and the bottom bar is replaced by the navigation bar on the left hand side. There’s easy access to the On Device, Utilities, Archive, and Trash functions that open up as fullscreen pages.
It remains to be seen whether this is a concerted effort by Google to optimize its apps for larger displays (finally), but at least the Photos app is easier on the eye thanks to the updated layout with is brought about by v5.25 of the app via the Play Store.
