Google Photos is getting a new “Quick Edit” feature, and it doesn’t work like you would expect. The idea is to give you a final chance to edit an image before sharing, but I’m not sure that’s what people want.
Here’s how it works. Instead of immediately giving you the share options when you tap the share button on an image, Google Photos will now give you a chance to make some last-minute tweaks. You get options to crop and “enhance” your photos, which basically means Google Photos will try to make them look better automatically. That’s it. Once you’re ready to share, simply tap the “Share” button again.
As mentioned, this isn’t the full-blown photo editing suite. You won’t find any fancy sliders or AI-powered magic here. It’s more about quick fixes you might want to do before sharing, like cropping out that random person in the background or making the colors pop a bit.
My question is, wouldn’t someone already have made those edits if they’re tapping the share button? I’m not sure why I would think opening the share menu is going to give me the opportunity to edit a photo. There’s literally an edit button in the same toolbar as the share button. But, I guess if you’re someone who likes to give photos an extra once-over before sending them out, this could be a handy little feature.
The good news is you can turn it off if you find it annoying. You’ll see a button to “Turn Off” in the top corner of the Quick Edit screen. Simple tap it and confirm you want to turn it off from the pop-up. You can always go back into the Sharing settings to enable it again. Profile photo > Photos Settings > Sharing > Quick Edit Before Sharing.
Google’s rolling this out slowly as a server-side update, so you might not see it on your phone just yet, and you can’t force it to appear through an app update. A few of us here at How-To Geek already have the feature on our phones. It’s not clear if this is an Android-only feature or rolling out to the iPhone app as well. Personally, I don’t plan on keeping it enabled, but you may feel differently.
