Google’s Gemini Is Now In Your Car, Too

Summary

  • Gemini is replacing Google Assistant on various Android devices including smartwatches and cars.
  • In addition to AI capabilities, Gemini offers features like message summaries and personalized news.
  • Gemini will be available on Wear OS, Android Auto, and Google TV in the coming months for enhanced assistant and app integration.

Google Assistant is officially dead, as Google started to kill it off in a staged manner to make Gemini everyone’s default assistant. And the few places where it’s still present are slowly but steadily getting moved to Gemini. Now, Gemini is landing in more places, including your car.

Google has announced that Gemini, which is mainly an AI chatbot but doubles as an assistant for performing tasks within your phone, is coming to a wide array of Android-powered devices aside from just phones and tablets. Gemini is landing on everything from smartwatches to cars, to TVs, and everything in between.

The chatbot is making an appearance on Wear OS, announced as part of Wear OS 6, though it’s not clear if it will be exclusive to that operating system or if it will come to previous OS versions as well. Gemini is taking the Google Assistant’s place as the assistant of choice for smartwatch users. With the power of AI, you should be able to speak to it more naturally and less robotically, and it should be able to comply with a wide array of requests. You can use it to set reminders, and you can use it for things like saving a locker number at the gym or retrieving details about a restaurant mentioned in an email, directly on the watch without needing to use a phone.

In your car, you can use it for things like finding a charging station along a route. Like with Wear OS, it’s replacing the regular Assistant experience in Android Auto. Gemini will, among other things, connect to messaging apps to summarize incoming messages and translate replies before sending, which is good when you’re behind the wheel and can’t really type out responses. Gemini Live is also available for longer commutes, so you can talk to the AI like a good old friend. It will also offer personalized news summaries (with the option to exclude specific topics like sports) or provide synopses of books.

Finally, Gemini is also coming to Google TV, where it can serve as a useful assistant for discovering new shows or movies within streaming services, or you can give it requests such as ultra-specific recommendations. Google TV also works as a smart home hub, though it’s not clear if Gemini will integrate with that just yet.

Gemini on all three of these places will land over the coming months. Contrary to the mobile app, the Google TV and Wear OS versions of Gemini seem to lean more on the assistant and app integration side, while the Android Auto version has full Gemini Live support, so you can talk to your car while you drive.
