The Synology DiskStation DS220+ is one of our favorite NAS enclosures. It’s also the best NAS for home and a contender for best value NAS for Plex. The Intel processor is good enough for 4K playback, but only just. It can start to struggle if you need to transcode media, more so when multiple people are using it.
The DS220+ is better for those who are looking to buy their first NAS for the home or office. Configuring file storage in Synology’s DSM OS is super easy and takes a few minutes.
If you’re after a NAS for Plex, the Synology DiskStation DS920+ is a better choice with the four available drive bays, which is a considerable upgrade compared to a two-bay, especially if you take RAID configurations into account. It’s powered by an Intel Celeron J4125 processor with 4GB of RAM, the latter of which can be upgraded.
It doesn’t end there, however. There are two M.2 slots that can be used for PCIe NVMe drives to act as a cache and speed up overall performance. Two Gigabit LAN ports can be combined through link aggregation, which does alleviate the lack of 5Gb or 10Gb connections. Finally, there are three USB-A 3.0 ports.
