[Guide] How to change app grid layout in Android 12

One of the newer customization features available in Android 12 is the ability to change your app grid layout with more ease than in previous versions of Android. You will still be able to choose the option that best fits your preference, but here is how you can reach that option in only a few simple taps from your home screen.

How to change app grid layout in Android 12

The app grid layout determines how much space an app can take up on your screen. The standard setup for Android out of the box is 5×5 (5 apps vertically and horizontally), but there are more options to changing this to 4×4, 4×5, 3×3, and 2×2.

Keep in mind that this option can vary from one OEM to the next, we are taking a look at the Pixel’s version of Android where you can adjust the option from the home screen. For other OEMs, you have to look for the option in the Settings while Samsung lets you choose the app drawer and home screen app grid layout individually.

With Android 12 on Pixel, the app grid layout is applied to your app drawer and the home screen together. So if you aren’t able to find Wallpaper & Style using this method, you will have to go through your settings and look for ‘app grid‘ or ‘wallpaper & style‘.

To start, navigate to your home screen and tap on any empty space on the screen. When you get the prompt, select Wallpaper & style.

You will enter the Wallpaper & style menu option, and you will go to the bottom of the menu to choose the app grid.

You will now be taken to a new screen where you will be shown a preview of your home screen with your preferred choice of app grid layout. Depending on your needs, you may or may not the icons to be larger or smaller, and of course, the number of apps can vary on a phone-to-phone basis.

    Customizing app grid layout

This is the app grid layout on the Pixel 4A (5G), but there should be further choices of apps on the screen on bigger screen displays like the Pixel 6 phones, or other Android 12 phones with larger displays. For instance, the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra on Android 12 offers an option for 4×6 and 5×6, which takes advantage of the larger screen space, but is a limitation on smaller display/resolution phones.

Keep in mind, that you can still customize each individual home screen, but you need to remember how much space you have vertically and horizontally, depending on your choice of layout.
