The Nothing Phone 2a came out a few months ago, presenting itself as the very first budget device in Nothing’s smartphone portfolio (though the company generally aims for more affordable devices). The design was exactly what you’d expect from the company, and it stood out quite significantly.
Well, now that the Nothing Phone 2a’s time in the spotlight seems to have come to an end, it looks like the company is ready to pass the baton to a new debutant, just a few months after the first. This won’t be an entirely new device, but will be called the Nothing Phone 2a Plus. Plus, we finally know a little more than nothing about it.
The name doesn’t make it hard to see that the Nothing Phone 2a Plus is meant to come with some kind of incremental improvement over the regular Nothing Phone 2a. In most cases, when you see the word “Plus” in a phone model, you expect it to have a bigger screen than the vanilla model does. In this case, I think the Nothing Phone 2a is already close enough to the upper limit of phone displays that this is unlikely.
So, what is going to change then? There are a few pieces of official information, which is great, and in line with my previous article when we didn’t know anything about the device, I’m glad to say one of my guesses has been proven right. The device is now confirmed to be coming with a new processor, and it’s the MediaTek Dimensity 7350 Pro, which Nothing says is “world-exclusive”, so you won’t find it anywhere else.
This processor is an octa-core unit with a maximum clock speed of 3.0 GHz, which gives it a 10% performance boost over the regular Nothing Phone 2a. It also comes with a better GPU, the same Mali-G610 MC4 but clocked at 1.3 GHz, which gives it an additional 30% speed increase compared to its predecessor. The provided image also lets us know it’ll come with 12GB of RAM with “RAM Booster” tech to add up to 8GB from your regular storage.
With The Processor And RAM In The Picture, What Other Improvements Can We Expect?
I expected a faster processor and that’s been confirmed (yes, it makes me feel good). There was a 12GB/256GB version of the Nothing Phone 2a, so perhaps we can’t say that the RAM has increased, but this might come in only one variant. In fact, I think that’s more likely, especially as a Plus model. It’s likely to match 256GB of storage as I feel 512GB might be above its pay grade.
I predicted that the phone will likely come with a battery bigger than the 5,000 mAh battery in the Phone 2a, and I think I stick to that one. Nothing has never gone above 5,000 mAh, so I could be wrong. Wireless charging might make an appearance too.
I definitely don’t think the screen will get bigger though, as it is already at the 6.7-inch mark, which is very big. There’s virtually no modern non-foldable phone with a screen bigger than 6.8 inches, so it wouldn’t be worth it.
