Home Depot’s New Smart Bulbs Can Fit Almost Anywhere

EcoSmart, from Home Depot has announced two new smart home products. The Universal Select Light Bulb and Kidde Smart Smoke & Smart Combo Alarm will be released very soon, but the Light Bulbs are pretty innovative.

The first device coming from EcoSmart is its Universal Select Light Bulb, which is coming this month or April. This bulb lets you adjust the brightness and choose from six shades of white light, ranging from warm White to bright Daylight Deluxe. The design lets people pick the right lighting for different situations.

The light bulbs can change from brightness and color of 2700K to 6500K, which is a very wide range. 6500K is just the regular outside lighting, which should make your room feel like it’s full of natural light. 2700 is the end of warm light and the beginning of soft light. It’s the orange color of the sunset, so it’s low enough for the evening.

While EcoSmart didn’t provide the cost of these lightbulbs, they are competing with something like the WYZE Bulb White lightbulbs that come with Alexa and Google Assistant. These lightbulbs come at $33.99 for a four-pack, which is a steal when you consider that these light bulbs have the same lighting situation, but not the diversity of wattages.

The main selling point of the Universal Select Light Bulb is that it can work with different wattages. EcoSmart didn’t provide the watts that it could work with, but the competition I listed above only works with 60 Watts, so having more than one wattage it can meet is a good deal. How much of a deal that is depends on the price it will eventually have.

Also coming in April is the Kidde Smart Smoke & Smart Combo Alarm with Ring Technology. This product combines smoke and carbon monoxide detection and connects to the Ring app for smart home integration. Users will receive real-time alerts if there’s a dangerous level of smoke or carbon monoxide, letting them monitor their homes remotely.

The alarms use Kidde’s smoke detection technology, and there’s an optional subscription service for around-the-clock monitoring through Ring. Ring subscription technically isn’t a feature for this smoke and carbon dioxide detector; it’s an add-on to a Ring subscription.

While regular Ring prices can start at 49.99 a year, you can only get the Virtual Security Guard add-on that monitors your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors with the $99.99 a year plan. This add-on also costs $99 a year, which means, at minimum, this feature will cost you $198 a year.

There are different models with varying connectivity options, but they should be on the cheaper side to be worth the money. A Ring Alarm Smoke & Co Listener costs $34.99 on Amazon and offers the same features. It even comes with the same stipulation that a Ring subscription is needed to get the monthly plans.

So it seems like Home Depot has a good selection for smart home buyers, but it will have to show how it’s better than the competition if they aren’t budget-friendly. When the EcoSmart are released, they will be on the Home Depot website and the Kidde devices should be on its official website.
