Where did it all begin?
The first slot machine was invented in San Francisco by Charles Fey. His device was known as the Liberty Bell. The 1894 Liberty Bell included three spinning reels, a single payline, and a fully automated payout system.
It also had a lever system, which you would pull in order to spin the reels. This system has later been studied by scientists who have discovered that players who physically pull the lever, feel as though they are in more control of the game – which of course is not the case.
Developments
From here on, the classic machine has had many changes over time.
In 1902, slot machines were officially banned, but the Liberty Bell continued to be manufactured. As cash prizes could no longer be won, the era of the fruit machine began! These machines used fruit symbols, and prizes were paid out in chewing gum and sweets of the corresponding flavour.
In the 21st century, Slots have been taken to a new level. With no more levers or chewing gum-related prizes, you can now play on digital machines, with colourful graphics and a variety of themes. Despite the dramatic changes, the general game functions are still similar to how they were with the Liberty Bell.
How do they work?
Now we know this history, let’s find out how these machines actually work and why do certain players win, or lose?
It’s important to remember when playing these games, that it’s all ultimately down to chance. A common misconception is that if someone has lost multiple times on one machine, it must be ‘due a win’ – slot machines do not adjust to a string of winning or losing games causing them to be ‘due’ for a win/loss.As mentioned, it is all down to chance.
Modern gaming machines use computer technology to operate their functions. Slot machine outcomes are determined using a Random Number Generator (RNG). A RNG is a mathematically-based systemwhich selects groups of numbers to determine which symbols are revealedto produce a winning or losing outcome.
So, this means that each symbol is randomly selected and the selection of that symbol is not influenced by any outside factors, like previous outcomes of winning/losing history.
