How Spotify’s New AI Playlist Feature Works

AI playlists let you get creative

In a recent blog post, Spotify says that you can instruct its new AI Playlist with text prompts. You can type phrases like “create a playlist for rainy days” or “play me nostalgic hits from the 90s”. The result is a list of 30 songs matching your description for your enjoyment. The prompts aren’t restrictive, so you can instruct the AI with references to movie characters, colors, emojis, and more. For example, you could say “I’m feeling blue”.

Although Spotify has built the feature on an intelligent model, it’s limited to music-related prompts and won’t generate responses outside it. The company also stated that they’ve put protective measures in place. While they haven’t told us exactly what those “measures” are, you want to avoid hurling insults, hate speech, or discriminatory language at the AI.

To use it, you’ll go to the Your Library menu on the app. Then tap a + icon in the top right corner and select AI Playlist. Next, you’ll see the AI screen asking you what you want to hear. You’ll use the text box at the bottom of your screen to type and send the phrases. But if you’re down for anything, you can use the suggestions.

Create and refine your playlists

AI playlist will generate a list of songs based on your prompt, and you have the option to refine it before you officially create it. Spotify hasn’t said anything about how this feature works. But it may allow you to remove or add songs to the playlist, or simply refresh the list on your behalf.

The Create option in the top left corner saves your playlist. You don’t want to abandon the screen without tapping it. Otherwise, you’ll need to generate a new playlist. Overall, the feature brings a new way to discover music in addition to the AI DJ Spotify launched recently. AI DJ works similarly to Playlists, with the major difference being that you won’t use text prompts.
