Your Ecobee thermostat can do more than just control the temperature in your home. It can also act as an intercom, play music, and even give you audible alerts when someone rings your Ring doorbell–no chime required.
Ring doorbells can send audible alerts to Ring-branded “Chimes,” and this is easy to set up in the app. However, you don’t need a Ring Chime to hear doorbell alerts in your home. It’s also possible to with an Ecobee thermostat if you know where to look (we do).
Connecting Your Ring Doorbell to Your Ecobee
Before we get started, you’ll need to have an Ecobee thermostat with Alexa support. At the time of writing, that includes the ecobee3, ecobee3 lite, ecobee Smart Thermostat Enhanced, and Smart Thermostat Lite. With that out of the way, let’s get started.
First, you’ll need to connect Ecobee to Alexa in the Amazon Alexa app for iPhone or Android–you won’t need the Ecobee or Ring apps. Open the Alexa app, tap the lightbulb in the bottom bar to go to the “Devices” page, and tap the plus (+) icon in the top corner. From here, select “Add Device,” search for “Ecobee,” and follow the guided steps to get your thermostat added.
Enabling Ring Doorbell Alerts
With your Ecobee thermostat added to the Alexa app, we can now create a routine with it. This routine will trigger a sound on your thermostat when your Ring doorbell button is pressed.
In the Alexa app, tap the plus (+) icon in the top corner and select “Routine” from the list. Tap “Add an Event” in the “When” section and find your Ecobee under the “Smart Home” category. Select “Doorbell” (“Motion” is also an option, if you’d like) and tap “Save.”
Now tap “Add an Action” for the “Alexa Will” section and go to “Sounds.” Choose a sound from the various categories. Then, to finish up, choose your Ecobee thermostat for the “Hear Alexa From” section and “Save” the routine.
Now, your Ecobee thermostat will act as a chime for your Ring doorbell. The cool thing is you have a bunch of options to choose from for the sound. It’s also possible to select “Announcement” instead of “Sound” and enter a custom phrase for Alexa to say when the doorbell is pressed.
