You’ll need to reset an AirTag if you want to give it to someone else to use.
Apple’s AirTag is a perfect way to track almost anything, from your luggage to keys and other items.
But if you ever want to give an AirTag to someone else, you’ll need to reset it since each tracker is tied to your specific Apple ID. We’ll show you how to reset an AirTag.
Head to the Find My App
Any AirTag owner knows that the Find My app is the place to get information about an AirTag including its last known location and the ability to find the device.
And you’ll need to use the Find My app to reset the AirTag as long as it’s within Bluetooth range.
Start by opening the app and select the Items tab. You will then see all of your AirTags. Choose the AirTag to remove.
On the page with the map, swipe up near the name of the AirTag. On that page, select Remove Item. The next page will show one final confirmation before resetting the device.

A Manual Reset Option
If for some reason you’re out of Bluetooth range when removing the AirTag from the Find My app, it will also need to be manually reset.
To do that, press down on the battery cover of the AirTag—that’s the stainless steel side—and rotate counterclockwise until it stops rotating. Then remove the cover and battery.
Place down a fresh battery until you hear a sound indicating the battery is connected. After the sound completes, remove the battery and repeat the process an additional four times.
On the fifth attempt, you’ll hear a slightly different tone. That indicates that the AirTag is ready to pair.
Once that is complete, it’s time to place the cover back on the AirTag. You can do that by aligning the three tabs on the cover with the three slots of the AirTag. Press down and rotate clockwise until it stops.
While that does take a few minutes, the extra work is part of the suite of AirTag privacy features.
