Do you frequently open a specific folder on your Windows 11 PC? If so, assign the folder a keyboard shortcut to open it in a flash next time. We’ll show you how to give your folders custom keyboard shortcuts in Windows 11.

    How Custom Keyboard Shortcuts Work

In this workaround, you create a desktop shortcut for your specific folder. Then you assign that desktop shortcut a keyboard shortcut.

When that assigned keyboard shortcut is pressed, your specified folder opens in a File Explorer window. This saves you from having to manually find and open the folder.

If you have several folders that you want to open this way, create desktop shortcuts for all those folders and put those desktop shortcuts in a folder on the desktop. This is to ensure your desktop doesn’t get cluttered with so many folder shortcuts.

Make a Keyboard Shortcut to Open a Folder on Windows 11

To begin, open the parent folder of the folder which you want to launch with a keyboard shortcut.

Right-click your folder (not the parent one) and select Show More Options > Send To > Desktop (Create Shortcut). This will place your folder’s shortcut on your desktop.

Right-click a folder and select Show More Options > Send To > Desktop (Create Shortcut).

Access your desktop by pressing Windows+D. On the desktop, find your folder’s shortcut. Right-click this shortcut and choose “Properties.”

Right-click the desktop shortcut and select "Properties."

In the Properties window, at the top, click the “Shortcut” tab. In the Shortcut tab, click the “Shortcut Key” field and press the shortcut you want to assign to your folder.

Then, at the bottom of the “Properties” window, click “OK.”

Click the "Shortcut Key" field on the "Properties" window.

And that’s all there is to it.

To now open your specified folder, simply press the keyboard shortcut that you assigned above. Enjoy!
