The Pura 70 Series Are High-End Devices, From Vanilla To Pro+
Huawei decided that this year, over a decade since the P series debuted, was the best time to shake things up in the nomenclature of their smartphone lineup. The P series is now the Pura series, and to launch it are the Pura 70, Pura 70 Pro, Pura 70 Pro+, and Pura 70 Ultra.
Before we get into each device, they share a lot of characteristics, so let’s talk about those first. For the most part, they all share the same design beyond the back panel finish. There are rounded corners and flat edges on the aluminum frame, a glass front with a selfie camera cutout, and a glass back panel with a unique triangular camera module with three lenses. The devices are also all IP68 weather-resistant.
The devices share the same 6.8-inch (6.6-inch on the vanilla model only) LTPO OLED display with 1.5K resolution, 120Hz refresh rate, 2500-nit peak brightness, and Kunlun Glass protection. They also all run on Huawei’s Kirin 9010 and HarmonyOS 4.2.
If you like selfies, any of these will suffice as they have the same 13MP sensor, just that the base model doesn’t come with autofocus. You’ll also find USB Type-C 3.1 with DisplayPort 1.2 on all models, so that’s faster transfer speeds over a wired connection as well as the ability to take advantage of an external display.
Huawei Pura 70
The Huawei Pura 70 is the baby of the bunch and comes in three storage configurations: 12GB of RAM with 256GB, 512GB, or 1TB. The camera setup is a 50MP variable aperture (f/1.4 to f/4.0) lens with OIS, a 12MP 5x periscope telephoto with OIS, and a 13MP ultrawide.
You get a 4,900 mAh battery, 66W wired, and 50W wireless charging. You can also take advantage of 7.5W reverse wireless charging and 5W reverse wired charging. The device starts at $760 and is available in Sakura Rose Red, Ice Crystal Blue, Snow White, and Feather Sand Black.
Huawei Pura 70 Pro and Pura 70 Pro+
The Pura 70 Pro And 70 Pro+ differ in only a few domains (size isn’t one of them). The 70 Pro comes with 12GB of RAM and either 256GB, 512GB, or 1TB of storage, but the 70 Pro+ boosts RAM to 16GB and comes in only 512GB and 1TB variants. The 70 Pro+ also supports satellite calling and messaging. The batteries are 5,050 mAh, with 100W of wired and 80W of wireless charging. Reverse charging is 20W wireless and 18W when wired.
The camera setups are identical here. They get the same 50MP variable aperture (f/1.4 to f/4.0) lens, but go for a 48MP 3.5x telephoto with OIS instead (that can focus starting from as close as 5cm!), and a 12.5MP ultrawide. The Pura 70 Pro comes in White, Black, and Purple colorways and starts at $900. The Pura 70 Pro+ opts for a unique plaid design for the back panel and comes in White, Black, and Silver. It starts at ~$1,100.
Huawei Pura 70 Ultra
The Pura 70 Ultra is the star of the show, as Ultra models tend to be, and it is a proper killer. First off, the design is a little different, especially with a slightly different camera module with a metal “XMAGE” badge and a vegan leather back panel. It shares most of the specs of the Pura 70 Pro+, coming with 16GB of RAM and either 512GB or 1TB of storage.
However, the cameras are where things go crazy and stray from the norm. It’s a 50MP variable aperture sensor that can go from f/1.6 to f/4.0. It has a massive 1-inch sensor behind the retractable lens — that’s right, the lens pops out when you open your camera. It also gets sensor-shift stabilization, a feature you don’t see much of, which moves the sensor instead of the lens for stabilization. And yes, it is superior to regular OIS.
That’s a lot for one camera, but it still has two more. One is a 50MP 3.5x telephoto lens with OIS and a 5cm minimum focusing distance. The other is a 40MP ultrawide. The phone also gets satellite messaging and calling in China. There’s a 5,200 mAh cell that can be charged at 100W when wired and 80W when wireless. You also get 20W reverse wireless charging and 18W reverse wired charging. You can get this phone in Star Black, Starburst White, Mocha Brown, or Chanson Green, and it starts at $1,380.
