I know, the title is harsh but believe me when I say that it’s coming from a good place. No, really. Huawei makes premium quality smartphones and the Mate X2 will be no different. It’s just that with Huawei’s ongoing problems and the resulting prohibition from including Google apps and services, the launch of the Mate X2 is virtually irrelevant to western markets.
That being said, there’s no reason why we can’t look at the Mate X2 and wonder what could have been if Huawei hadn’t been banned from working with Google. We might have seen the Mate X launched properly in western markets thus giving the Samsung Galaxy Fold a run for its money.
As for the Mate X2? Well, thanks to Huawei’s official Weibo account we know that it will be announced on February 22nd in China and it could sport an inwardly folding flexible display instead of the outwardly folding panel seen on the Mate Xs. Huawei’s Richard Yu has apparently been using the device for a while (as he previously did with its predecessors) and says that the Mate X2 is “full of surprises”.
With the changing of the US administration, there has been some hope that Huawei might regain the ability to work with Google but so far there has been no evidence that this has come to pass.
