The Pura 70 Ultra Will Combine A One-Inch Sensor With An RYYB Color Filter
Huawei doesn’t flex its muscles as much in Western markets as it used to, which sucks, because they were literally my favorite smartphone manufacturer at the time (I wanted the P30 Pro, so badly). However, they still make phones, with the same focus on innovation and high performance.
This year, according to a leak from Digital Chat Station on Weibo, the upcoming Huawei Pura 70 Ultra will come with a combination of two features that we’re yet to have ever seen in a smartphone: a one-inch sensor and an RYYB color filter on its main camera. The camera is also expected to be 50MP. But, let’s break it down: why do each of these things matter so much?
Your Smartphone’s Camera Sensor
Well, let’s start by talking about sensors. The sensor is responsible for converting the light that hits it into digital information that shows up a photo on your screen, and the better the sensor is at translating the light that touches it, the better your picture looks. When it comes to photography, light is everything, so the more light the sensor can receive, the better (it’s also why bigger apertures are a perk).
Now, this part might be confusing, but not all 50MP sensors are built equal. 50MP is 50 million pixels. If you put 50 million pixels on a sensor the size of a stamp, and another 50 million pixels on a sensor the size of a notebook, the pixels on the notebook can be bigger because they have more space to occupy. Bigger pixels also pick up more light than smaller ones, and remember, light is everything.
So, just like other phones with similar camera setups, a 50MP one-inch sensor on its own should be great in low light.
A Smartphone’s Color Filter
Now, I’ve been a Huawei fan for a long time, and again, I wanted the P30 Pro badly. This is why I know for a fact that it was the first phone to come with an RYYB color filter as opposed to RGB filters on all other smartphones at the time.
I know that an RYYB filter replaces each green pixel with two yellow ones and this somehow equates to better light capture, though I’m not too sure about the technical details regarding how it achieves that. It does have the downside of naturally making pictures more yellow-tinted, so it is up to Huawei to make the right tweaks in the software to make sure the photos look normal.
The Huawei Pura 70 Ultra Should Be A Master Of The Dark
We’ve seen phones with one of either, and they tend to be great when it comes to photography in darker locations, and theoretically, having both of these in a single device will mean out-of-this-world low-light performance.
Even if most of us aren’t going to show any interest in this smartphone when it comes out, it’ll still be great to know that there’s still some serious innovation going on (and hopefully, that should spur the competitors to do better).
