SEATTLE – Washington will hit the road for its final match of the 2022 regular season, making way for Pullman, Washington, to take on rival Washington State in the Boeing Apple Cup Series at Lower Soccer Field Friday night.
The match, scheduled for a 7 p.m. PT kickoff, will be available on Pac-12 Washington, while live stats can be found at HuskyStats.com.
SCOUTING WASHINGTON STATE
The Cougars are in their eighth season under head coach Todd Shulenberger. With Shulenberger at the helm, Washington State has made five trips to the NCAA Tournament, including the 2019 College Cup, winning a program-record 16 games.
Washington State enters Friday’s regular season finale with an 8-6-4 overall record, sitting eighth in the Pac-12 table with a 2-5-3 league record.
Wazzu is led offensively by junior forward Margie Detrizio with 10 goals on the season, ranking as the fifth most in the Pac-12. Detrizio also paces the Cougars with five assists, posting the third most points in the league at 25. Senior forward Grayson Lynch is another attacking threat with four goals and two assists.
Sophomore Nadia Cooper has started all 18 matches and seen nearly all the action in goal for Wazzu. The Houston native owns a 1.12 goals against average and a .701 save percentage on 47 stops.
SERIES HISTORY
Washington State leads the all-time series with Washington 15-9-8. Since the Boeing Apple Cup Series was enacted in 2018, the two sides have split the five meetings at 2-2-1. The Huskies will be seeking their first win in Pullman since 1996.
LAST MEETING (10/21/21)
SEATTLE – In a physical, high-intensity match at Husky Soccer Stadium, Washington came away with a 4-2 loss to No. 18 Washington State in the Boeing Apple Cup Series. The Huskies came from a goal down in the first half to equalize but couldn’t match the Cougars four goals on a cold Friday night on Montlake.
The Cougars opened the scoring in the 31st minute on a goal by Grayson Lynch. In a common occurrence for the Huskies as of late, they quickly bounced back, equalizing within the next three minutes.
Ruby Hellstrom delivered a ball in off a corner and after bouncing around in the box, the ball trickled into goal off a WSU defender for an own goal. It was the first goal the Huskies have scored on the year via an own goal.
WSU however would bounce back, scoring three goals within the first twenty minutes of play to open the second half, and taking a 4-1 lead.
The Huskies once again rallied when McKenzie Weinert scored her third goal of the season, rocketing a shot past the goalkeeper in the 76th minute. Summer Yates assisted on the play for her fifth of the year.
For the Huskies, it was too little too late as UW looked to claw back but were unable to do so, having a number of good looks on goal late in the contest.
COMING ON LATE
Three of true freshman Kelsey Branson’s four goals this season have come since the start of Pac-12 play. Starting out as a reserve player, Branson has started each of the last six matches, playing at least 89 minutes in each of the last five.
FLARE FOR THE DRAMATIC
Washington created some late-game magic on Montlake to stun Arizona State 2-1 in last Sunday’s Senior Day match. The Huskies scored twice in the final four minutes to flip the script on the Sun Devils, with Karlee Stueckle netting the game-winner in the 90th minute to send the home stands into a frenzy.
It was the first 90th-minute game winner for the Huskies since snatching a late 2-1 win over rival Washington State in 2020. The scorer of the winning goal in that match? Karlee Stueckle.
KEEPING IT 100
Washington had two players appear in TopDrawerSoccer.com’s Top-100 Rankings, with Summer Yates coming in at No. 46 overall and Kolo Suliafu being tabbed at No. 35 in the top-100 freshmen rankings.
WHEN IT MATTERS MOST
Transferring from fellow Pac-12 member Oregon State, McKenzie Weinert has taken that experience and made it pay off for the Huskies. Of the seven goals Weinert has scored since transferring to UW in 2021, six have come against Pac-12 opponents.
HISTORY MADE
When she laced up her boots in UW’s match at Cal, fifth-year senior Summer Yates made history. No player in the history of the Washington program has donned a Husky kit more times than Yates, who set the career games played record with her 87th appearance.
Yates also ranks inside the top-5 in both goals and assists at UW, sitting at No. 5 with 26 career goals and No. 4 with 22 career assists.
IT TAKES A VILLAGE
Washington’s 38 assists are good for the 22nd most in the nation and fourth most in the Pac-12. The Huskies have recorded at least one assist on 26 of their 37 goals on the season, including multiple helpers 12 times.
SPREADING THE WEALTH
Washington’s scoring output has come from up and down its roster, with 13 different Huskies scoring a goal. Summer Yates leads the pack with six goals, With Karlee Stueckle one back with five this season. Kelsey Branson, Kyla Ferry, Hailey Still and McKenzie Weinert are all close behind with four apiece. The Huskies rank fourth in the Pac-12 with 37 goals despite being one of just four teams in the league without a player with more than six goals scored.
IT’S WHERE YOU FINISH
Of the 19 players to start a match for the Huskies this season, eight began their career at another Division I institution before transferring to Montlake. Of those eight transfers, six have started at least eight times for UW this season.
OLD HEADS
The Huskies are led by a veteran group with a wealth of experience, with 17 players entering the season with at least three seasons of collegiate experience, including 11 Huskies with four years of experience or more. This group is being leaned on to provide leadership to a crop of 10 true freshmen.
