Price and Availability
The Hyper HyperSpace Bluetooth Wireless Keyboard is available for $89.99 from Amazon and Hyper. It comes with a USB-C charging cable and is only available in silver. Hyper designed the keyboard to match the Apple aesthetic seen on MacBooks and in other accessories like the Magic Trackpad.
A Familiar Design With Some Upgrades
At first glance, it might be hard to tell the difference between Hyper HyperSpace Bluetooth Wireless Keyboard and any of Apple’s official options. And that’s a good thing. White keys sit on top of a gray metal body and are easy to see in a variety of lighting conditions.
On the flip side of the keyboard are built-in elevated feet that help place the keyboard in a comfortable position on your desk. They’re not adjustable like with some other keyboards, but that didn’t bother me. On the top side of the keyboard is the easy-to-reach power button, USB-C charging port, and light sensor for the backlight.
The battery lasts for up to three months on a single charge, and Hyper also provides a USB-C cable, something many accessory manufacturers skimp on. I’ve worked on the keyboard for almost two weeks, and the battery life has just taken a 10 percent hit, so it seems that those battery life numbers will hold up in long-term use.
One of the nicest features of the keyboard is that the function keys are the same as the Mac, making it easy for me to quickly transfer from my MacBook Air without any slip-ups. There are also some additional features for almost any age of computer, Mac, or Windows. There’s a print screen button and a button to eject a CD. A full-sized keypad is also a nice addition.
At the end of the top row are three buttons where you can quickly change devices. I set those up so I could switch between my iPad Pro and another iPad Air I frequently use. It’s nice to easily switch between devices with just a quick button push. I also enjoyed the dedicated Screen Lock button next to the device switching keys.
Since the keyboard is Bluetooth, there’s no need to worry about dongles or software. I just paired the keyboard with my Mac in a few seconds.
Windows users will also be happy to hear that there are labels for both the Windows and Alt buttons instead of the Mac’s Option and Command. The keyboard is also compatible with ChromeOS devices.
When typing, the keys themselves are also comfortable to use. While there are a lot of gimmicks that supposedly help you type better, I prefer large, flat keys. And the HyperSpace provides just that. In just a few hours, I was able to start touch typing without any issue.
The Backlight Shines Through the Night and Then Some
I seem to be allergic to well-lit rooms and always find myself working in dark conditions, so a backlit keyboard is always a must-have. The HyperSpace backlit system sparkles and is more than bright enough.
I was a bit confused at first about how to turn on the backlight. There’s no mention in the instruction manual, and there’s just a simple light bulb icon on the space bar. But after some trial and error—pressing the function key and the space bar at the same time— I turned it on. There are three levels: low, medium, and high.
The low setting is fine, but the backlight truly shines on the medium and high levels. I turned off all the lights I possibly could, and could still easily see every key. No more hunting in the dark for the right key. This is something Apple’s Magic Keyboard lacks entirely.
An obvious downside to the backlight is battery life. While you can go for 24 hours of use at the low setting, the high setting will drain your keyboard’s battery life after just 6 hours of use. So if you’re a big fan of the feature, make sure to keep a charging cable close.
Should You Buy the Hyper HyperSpace Bluetooth Wireless Keyboard?
If you’re a Mac user, I can highly recommend the Hyper HyperSpace Bluetooth Wireless Keyboard. It has all the bells and whistles of Apple’s official keyboard without Touch ID, and is significantly less expensive. The typing experience is also very comfortable, especially with the built-in elevated feet and full number pad.
Being able to quickly switch between my MacBook Air and iPad Pro makes working quick and easy. And that backlight helps me get to work no matter how dark my home is.
