Over the summer, Hyundai started teasing the all-new electric IONIQ 6 sedan, then officially unveiled the stylish and futuristic new vehicle in July. However, ahead of the European release date, the company has revised the estimated EPA/WLTP range and revealed it’s one of the most efficient vehicles on the road.
The Hyundai IONIQ 6 electric vehicle will offer a nearly best-in-class range with a new rating of 381.5 miles per charge on the high-end Long Range model with its 77.4 kWh battery. During the initial announcement this summer, the company suggested a range of around 378, so the change isn’t drastic, but it’s still better than much of the competition.
The Hyundai IONIQ 6 is the brand’s second electric car and looks to build on the success of the Ioniq 5 crossover. The “streamliner” sedan sits on Hyundai’s 800V E-GMP platform, which also powers EVs from Kia and Genesis.
For those keeping track, Tesla’s Model 3 Long Range only gets around 374 miles, meaning the likely more affordable Hyundai is at the top of its game. Additionally, Hyundai has several smaller battery packages offering between 267 and 339 miles on a charge. Those vehicles will cost significantly less, too, but those who need more range will want to spring for the Long Range IONIQ 6.
As for charging, the IONIQ 6 supports 400 and 800-volt fast charging, and Hyundai says the car can charge from 10-80% in under 18 minutes, as long as you use a fast charging station.
While it looks unique, the overall design and shape allow the vehicle to offer such a solid range estimate. That’s due to the ultra-low drag coefficiency of 0.21. For comparison, other EVs using the same platform are rated for around 310 miles of driving distance.
The Hyundai IONIQ 6 hits the streets in Europe later this year, around the end of Q3. Sadly, it won’t come to North American markets until sometime in 2023. And unfortunately, we still don’t have a price tag to share but expect a premium for the Long Range variant.
