Last year I reviewed the Insta360 Flow Pro, the first iPhone gimbal to support Apple’s DockKit technology for seamless integration with the iPhone. Insta360 is now introducing Flow 2 Pro, an improved version of its gimbal with multiple improvements – and I had the chance to try it out in advance.
If you’re not familiar with gimbals, they can be used to add better stability when taking photos or filming videos. Even though the iPhone’s standard stabilization is already pretty good, nothing compares to having a gimbal to get more professional results.
What’s new with Insta360 Flow 2 Pro
When it comes to the Insta360 Flow 2 Pro, it features a refreshed design that is both lighter and more robust. The controls have been updated with a larger thumbstick compared to the previous generation. It’s also easier to use the gimbal as a tripod. Another nice addition to the Insta360 Flow 2 Pro is the small mirror on the back, which helps you frame yourself for selfies or vlogging more easily.
Insta360 has also redesigned the Flow 2 Pro’s accessories. The optional LED flash is brighter and also easier to connect as it no longer requires a cable, and the MagSafe adapter for iPhone also works as a stand when you’re not using the gimbal.
Just like the Insta360 Flow Pro, the new Flow 2 Pro supports Apple’s DockKit API, which was introduced with iOS 17 and makes it easier for accessory manufacturers to integrate motorized iPhone stands with camera apps. With this API, gimbals like the Flow 2 Pro can not only control the camera, but also use the Vision framework for real-time tracking.
Setting up the Insta360 Flow 2 Pro is also super easy thanks to the built-in NFC. All you have to do is hold your iPhone close to the NFC area and you’ll see a prompt on your phone to pair the gimbal. You can also download the Insta360 app to unlock even more features and controls. For instance, the app has not only manual camera controls, but also some cinematic filters that I really like.
There’s also Deep Track 4.0, a new version of the Insta360 app’s tracking technology that lets users select a specific object to always keep it in frame. There’s also a new feature called Active Zoom Tracking, which automatically zooms in and out to center a person or object. Think of Apple’s Center Stage, but for shooting videos with the iPhone camera. The tracking is pretty decent, although not perfect.
One thing I appreciate about the Insta360 Flow Pro and which is also present in the new version is the ability to use the gimbal as a power bank for the iPhone via the USB-C connector. It’s not enough to fully charge your iPhone, but it can save you in an emergency. Another thing I love is the new travel case that lets you protect and carry the gimbal with all its extra accessories.
Wrap up
Overall, the Insta360 Flow 2 Pro is indeed more stable than the original Flow Pro. It’s also smoother in its movements, which makes the videos look better. If you use your iPhone to shoot professional videos, having a gimbal like the Insta360 Flow 2 Pro will certainly make your life a lot easier. I’ve been using mine to work on my vlog and it definitely makes a difference.
You can now order the Insta360 Flow 2 Pro for $159.99 in its Standard version, while there’s a Creator Bundle available for $189.99. For more information, visit the Insta360 website.
