iOS 19 could bring AI to the Calendar app per just-revealed acquisition

Apple acquires companies all the time, but most of them we don’t hear about. Thanks to a recent EU disclosure, however, we know that one 2024 acquisition is likely to lead to the first Apple Intelligence features for the Calendar app—possibly as soon as iOS 19.

Mayday acquisition likely to power Apple Intelligence for Calendar app

As spotted by MacGeneration, the EU has published a list of several acquisitions Apple and other major tech players have made over the past 18 months.

One notable find: Mayday Labs Inc.

Mayday, per its still-live website, was an AI-assisted calendar app before Apple bought it.

Your AI scheduling co-pilot: The all-in-one Calendar, Task Manager and Scheduling Assistant for Mac, iOS and iPad.

Mayday is the future of scheduling. A calendar, to-do list, and scheduling assistant all in one platform that uses AI to help you organize, protect, and manage your day.

Mayday was acquired by Apple on April 3, 2024, and the app was officially sunset on May 1, 2024.

Mayday’s AI features and iOS 19 prospects

Per its website, Mayday’s features included:

  • Auto-schedule everything: Find time to meet with others without having to interpret their schedules. Find time to work on your tasks based on your ever-changing priorities.
  • Always learning: Mayday combines your scheduling preferences and patterns with best practices around productivity to schedule your events & tasks at ideal times
  • Streamlined scheduling for teams: Mayday works best when you use it with others. When creating a new event, Mayday does the heavy lifting to suggest the right time without you needing to decipher your co-worker’s schedules.
  • AI-scheduled Tasks: Make time for what matters with task management in Mayday. With as little input as the duration and time frame, Mayday’s AI will find the best time to ensure you get things done.
  • Automatic rescheduling: Priorities can shift as your schedule changes, but Mayday’s got your back. With both automatic rescheduling and one-click rescheduling, your calendar is now as dynamic as you are.
  • Scheduling links powered by AI: Mayday’s integrated scheduling links allow you to make yourself available without giving away all of your free time. Set limits, nudge guests towards ideal times, and let your AI assistant help keep your schedule balanced.

Though there’s no guarantee Mayday’s technology will make it into Apple Calendar, it seems highly likely.

Calendar is one of the only major Apple apps that doesn’t yet have Apple Intelligence features, despite gaining several other improvements in the last year.

Apple’s spring acquisition would have meant there wasn’t enough time to integrate Mayday’s capabilities into Calendar in iOS 18.

But now that it’s been over a year since the acquisition, an iOS 19 appearance sounds about right.

Another potential destination for Mayday’s tech is as part of Siri’s AI upgrades. Having deep knowledge of your calendar and tasks is all part of the new Siri’s promise.
