Apple may be hitting home runs with new iPhone apps lately, but it’s striking out completely when it comes to iPad support.
First up to the plate was Journal, the iPhone-only app that arrived with iOS 17.2. Apple got another shot at knocking Journal out of the park with iOS and iPadOS 18. While the iPhone version received much love, the iPad version remained on the bench.
One year ago, Apple really stepped up to the plate with Apple Sports on iPhone. The app has gotten much better in recent updates, but it’s still iPhone-only. The countdown is on to see which comes first: an Apple Sports widget or an Apple Sports iPad version.
Now let’s go out to the ballgame, but don’t expect an invitation from iPad. Apple’s new Invites app can send invitations to any device, but there’s no iPad app just yet.
At least the iPhone versions of Sports and Invites work on the iPad.
No iPad version for Journal is especially disappointing for iPad users because it’s a system app and not downloaded separately from the App Store. That means users can’t even run the iPhone version, which would work and look fine in Stage Manager mode.
iPad users may have thought the days of iPhone-only apps from Apple were over. Apple did finally bring both Weather and Calculator to the iPad after all. But these super interesting and actually useful project apps only exist on the iPhone for now.
Apple is pitching a strong game with its newest apps, but when it comes to getting iPad versions across home plate, it might be time to bring in the closer.
