iPhone 13 Pro Could Miss Out On Apple’s Best Camera

The iPhone 13 range is expected to feature several new killer upgrades, but one appears to be reserved only for the flagship model.

If current rumors are true, the iPhone 13 range will include several killer camera upgrades, including an all-new software-based image stabilization system and even portrait video. Now, new information suggests the camera will receive a significant hardware upgrade as well.

The details come from respected industry analyst and serial leaker, Ming-Chi Kuo, who claims that this year’s iPhone 13 Pro Max will include an improved main camera lens with a wider f/1.5 aperture. This will give the new model a boost in light gathering performance which typically results in better low-light imaging and reduced noise.

The current iPhone Pro Max has a smaller main lens aperture of f/1.6, a spec Apple is expected to retain in all but the flagship model of the forthcoming iPhone 13 range. This means the iPhone 13 Pro Max camera can be expected to perform slightly differently, and hopefully better, than the smaller 2021 models.

However, all iPhone 13 Pro models look set to benefit from an upgraded f/1.8 ultra-wide lens, according to one of Kuo’s earlier predictions.

While lens aperture is a crucial factor in camera performance, note that when it comes to light-gathering performance, the f-number is inextricably linked to the sensor size. The bigger the sensor, the more total light is captured for any given f-number.

This will become increasingly important as rival manufacturers, such as Huawei and Xiaomi adopt ever-larger sensors for their main cameras, posing a growing challenge to the iPhone which still uses relatively small ones.
