Starting with the 2020 iPhone 12 lineup, Apple phones no longer come with a charger or headphones in the box. This is a good move for the environment because it should significantly reduce e-waste. And if you have an old USB charger, Lightning-connector EarPods, or any wireless headphones, they’ll continue to work with your new phone. But if you are starting fresh or just want extras, you can find some great, affordable options that are even better than what Apple used to include with every new iPhone. Here’s what we recommend.
Every iPhone released since 2017 has supported fast charging. All you need is a charger with USB-C Power Delivery and a USB-C–to–Lightning cable (a suitable cable comes in the iPhone box, but we have some favorites if you need extras). We like Anker’s PowerPort III Nano because it is smaller and less expensive than the comparably powerful chargers Apple sells, and also because it comes from a brand we trust.
If you want to charge more than one device at a time, we have additional picks in our guide to USB phone chargers.
Whatever your budget, you can get great wireless earbuds that outshine the wired freebies Apple formerly provided. Our all-around favorites are the Jabra Elite 75t earbuds, which offer a comfortable fit, full track and volume controls, water resistance, 7.5 hours of battery life per charge, and clear microphones for phone calls and video chats. For Apple fans looking to get the most out of the iOS features available only via Apple’s proprietary H1 wireless chip, look to the Beats Powerbeats Pro set. With a more-secure fit, easier-to-use controls, and a nine-hour listening time, the Powerbeats Pro earbuds provide a better experience than the AirPods Pro. If you’re on a budget, the EarFun Free 2 earbuds are lightweight and extremely water-resistant. They also offer a full suite of onboard controls, have a seven-hour battery life per charge, and sound quite good (though their larger size, touch-based controls, and more-pronounced high frequencies may not be for everyone).
Of course, you can find even more options, designed for every type of lifestyle. To view more true wireless headphones, be sure to check out our wireless earbuds guide.
