Jack Dorsey steps down as Twitter CEO, takes shot at ‘founder-led’ mindset

Jack Dorsey stepped down as CEO of Twitter, posting a tweet on November 29, 2021, declaring he was done with the role of leading one of the most popular social media sites on planet Earth. That honor has been granted to Parag Agrawal, who will be taking over as the chief executive officer of the platform.

In his resignation letter-slash-email, which Dorsey publicly shared on Twitter, he stated it was time for him to leave on the basis that he had a worthy successor lined up and didn’t want Twitter bound to the “founder-led” mindset. He then shared some motivational words with the company’s employees, said hello to his mother, and signed off.

He stated he was sharing the email publicly on the basis that he wants Twitter to be the “most transparent company in the world.” The changes he outlined, including resigning as CEO, are effective immediately, meaning today marks Parag’s first day in his new role.

Dorsey’s announcement tweet’s responses are a mixed bag. Some people are crestfallen at the news of his departure, sharing the sentiment that Twitter won’t be the same without him. Others are arguing that even the CEO of Twitter can no longer stand Twitter, spinning the stepdown as a sign that the platform is too toxic for even its creators to tolerate and operate. Between these two extremes are a sea of memes.

Regardless of the reactions to the news, Dorsey himself had an optimistic tone in his public resignation letter, seemingly confident in the future of the company.
