Japan to tax smartphone games from tech giants

TOKYO — The Japanese government is poised to strengthen the collection of consumption tax on smartphone games from overseas.

According to an American research firm Sensor Tower, about half of the top 100 smartphone games sold in Japan in 2022 were created by foreign companies, with China having the largest number. There are cases where the consumption tax received from Japanese users is not paid to the Japanese tax authorities by these game creators.
