Latest Leak Reveals Dazzling Upgrade

It’s just a matter of a few weeks until the 2022 iPhones are released, and the latest rumors are coming thick and fast. It now looks like we have an insight into what colors the new models will be dressed in, and it’s pretty cool.

August 6 update below. This post was first published on August 4, 2022.

Leaker @Jioriku has had plenty to say about what they think is coming to this fall’s phone release from Apple, and it included a list of the colors that are predicted. Here they are…

For the iPhone 14, there will be six colors at launch. That’s the same number as are available for the iPhone 13 now. And they are, white, black, green, red, blue and purple.

August 6 update. As you’ll read below, one of the new colors in which the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro are expected to be dressed is purple. Not the first time there’s been an purple iPhone as both iPhone 11 and iPhone 12 came in such a hue (though they were different shades, for sure).

But if true, this would definitely be the first time a Pro iPhone would be purple. Since @Jioriku made their claims, a number of images have appeared that seek to show exactly what the new iPhones will look like. While many look sort of lilac or mauve again, one render stands out. On Twitter, somebody called Tech God (@tgod34748) has been judged to have come up with the most accurate version of the new color, according to @adry_ghincea, who describes themselves like this: “My dream is to be a designer, my life is about fashion.”

It’s not clear how authoritative they are about the final color, but it’s certainly an arresting shade, and much deeper and darker than other takes on it. I really like it. When challenged about how deep and dark it is, the reply is that it will look almost black, depending on the light.

I find that a bit surprising. After all, Apple already has Graphite in the Pro range, which similarly looks almost black in many lights. Will Apple want another iPhone that dark, so dark in fact that it may be hard to tell the two apart in many situations?

Well, just possibly. After all, the Apple Watch Series 7 green and black colors are both very dark and they look black in many lighting situations. Only when the green catches the light just right does its green shade shine through.

In other words, with recent colors such as Apple Watch green, or with Starlight and Midnight on Apple Watch, iPhone and MacBook Air, Apple has delighted in showing us colors which take on an extra depth in the right lighting.

There are other renders of what the color will look like, and let’s remember that on the iPhone 14 it will almost certainly be a glossy, shiny finish where the Pro will be matte-finish. That glossiness may lead to the iPhone 14 being brighter than the iPhone 14 Pro.

More news as we have it.

Now, back to the original leak.

There are four things to note here.

First, these are emphatically not the names Apple is definitely going to call them. The current range has no black or white options, instead calling its darkest shade Midnight and its sumptuous gold-and-silver-with-a-white-back finish Starlight. Additionally, there’s no red in the current range, but rather PRODUCT(RED) to indicate that money is donated to a worthy cause.

I believe that PRODUCT(RED) and Midnight will definitely be the color names, and I’d be surprised if Starlight, given its success, isn’t there. Blue and Green will be the names of those shades, I’d say.

The second thing to note is that there’s a new color in here, purple, replacing the current pink, even though that seems to have been pretty popular (it is a very cute shade of pastel pink).

But purple is undoubtedly welcome. It’s not the first purple. There was a purple iPhone 11 and a darker version with the same name for the iPhone 12. Both were more lilac than purple to be brutally frank. So, maybe 2022 will be the first time there’s going to be a deep, visceral purple. We’ll see.

Third, and this applies to the Pro colors, too, none of them will be identical to the current versions. Every year, Apple changes the colors, even if the names remain the same. Even PRODUCT(RED) is subtly different from year to year and I’d expect the same this time around.

The current green is beautiful but it will be different this fall, assuming the leaker is correct.

Fourth, please note that the iPhone 13 launched in five colors, not six as predicted here. The sixth color, green, was added half way through the year. The iPhone 12 launched in five colors, but iPhone 11 appeared in six at release, so it’s not impossible.

On to the iPhone 14 Pro, then.

The new colors, it’s predicted, will be Green, Silver, Gold, Graphite and Purple. I’m certain that Silver, Gold and Graphite will be correct (though Graphite could just possibly have a name overhaul).

And a new Purple makes sense, though I think it will have a different name and will likely be a different shade from the iPhone 14.

Green will replace the current Alpine Green.

But I’d just point out that there have never previously been five Pro colors at launch, it’s always been four since the Pro was introduced in 2019. Alpine Green was added to the range just a few months ago. It’s not impossible, but I’m just adding the tiniest note of skepticism here.

The best thing of all: we’re only a few dozen days away from knowing everything about the next range of iPhones.
