The Asus ROG Ally, released in 2023, already came into the market as one of the best handheld PC gaming models available. It was one of the lighter models available, with a high-resolution screen and plenty of power from the Ryzen Z1 Extreme APU. It was also one of the cheaper options, undercut by only the Steam Deck.

It’s been established from earlier leaks that the ROG Ally X is not going to be leaps and bounds over the ROG Ally on the spec sheet, but thanks to a leak from VideoCardz, we know it does bring some very notable improvements that are hard to shrug at. In fact, these upgrades seem to make it king among its peers.

First off, it is only going to be available in one configuration, which is with the AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme. The original device offered the option of the vanilla Ryzen Z1. An external GPU will now be supported over the USB4 standard instead of the proprietary ROG XG Mobile. The RAM also gets boosted to 24GB from 16GB, giving it the most RAM of any handheld gaming device. You’ll also get a 1TB SSD in the more common 2280 size as opposed to the 512GB 2230 SSD in the ROG Ally.

Perhaps most excitingly, the battery gets cranked up to an 80 Wh cell, which is a 100% increase over the 40 Wh battery in 2023’s model. It also makes it a much larger battery than any of its competitors (the MSI Claw only hits 53 Wh). This new battery only adds 70g in weight and half a centimeter in thickness. That’s impressive because it’s still more portable than the Steam Deck and Lenovo Legion Go.

Which Specs Will Remain The Same As Before?

It’s shocking that the ROG Ally X isn’t considered a big upgrade with all of those juicy improvements, and that makes us excited for what an actual generational upgrade might bring. You get the sole choice of the ROG Z1 Extreme APU (which is built on the AMD Zen 4 and RDNA 3 architecture. This was one of the options on the ROG Ally and it is specced the same, with eight cores and 5.1 GHz maximum clock speed. The integrated GPU is the same too.

The screen doesn’t change, from a 7-inch 120Hz FHD unit with 500 nits of peak brightness. Connectivity options stick to WiFi 6E and Bluetooth 5.2. Of course, Windows 11 remains the OS at play.

When Can We Expect The ROG Ally X To Launch?

The ROG Ally X is expected to launch on June 2nd, which is just in a few days. There’s no notion of price at this moment, but it should be expected to be somewhat more expensive than the Z1 Extreme version of the ROG Ally, which was $699.
