Leaker shares new iPhone 17 Air details: Impressive weight, lackluster battery

In a new post on Naver, smartphone supply chain leaker yeux1122 has shared two new details regarding Apple’s upcoming iPhone 17 Air: its battery capacity and weight.

This account, for the most part, aggregates leaks shared across Chinese social media. It has a somewhat reputable track record when it comes to sharing knowledge from the supply chain.

Todays new post highlights a few key details regarding the iPhone 17 Air, including the weight, battery capacity, and thickness. These details come from a “mass production confirmed sample.”

It reaffirms that the phone will have a 5.5mm thickness, something that analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has shared in the past. On top of that, it reveals two new specifications:

  • A weight of approximately 145g
  • Battery capacity of 2800mAh

Sub-optimal battery life

Recently, we have seen a number of reports surrounding the fact that the iPhone 17 Air will have a less than ideal battery capacity, with Apple’s internal tests finding that only around 60-70% of users will be able to get a full day of battery life out of the phone. Traditionally, that number is around 80-90%.

The battery capacity of 2800mAh isn’t necessarily surprising. That places it around the same battery capacity as the nearly five year old iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro, both of which shared a 2815mAh cell in a 6.1-inch form factor. Neither of those phones had stellar battery life, but it certainly wasn’t terrible.

Apple is also reportedly implementing an AI-powered battery optimization feature in iOS 19, which’ll likely help the less-than-ideal battery capacity. For reference, iPhone 16 offers a 3561mAh battery, and iPhone 16 Plus offers a 4674mAh battery.

That means iPhone 17 Air will have a roughly 20% battery reduction from a standard iPhone, and roughly 40% from an iPhone of a similar screen size.

The post also mentions that theres a “possibility” of installing a high-density battery with a 2800mAh cell size. It mentions that this will increase the “actual capacity” by 15-20% if implemented. If this part comes to fruition, then iPhone 17 Air could come close to matching standard iPhone battery life.

Impressively light weight

On the more positive side of things, though – the iPhone 17 Air will come in at around 145 grams according to this leak. That places it around the same weight as an iPhone SE 2 or iPhone 13 mini. Those phones came in at 148 grams and 141 grams, respectively.

You’ll essentially experience tiny iPhone levels of weight, stretched across a much larger 6.6-inch canvas.

The iPhone 17 Air will certainly feel light, and should truly live up to its rumored “Air” naming.
