LG, a South Korean electronics company, sells hundreds of television models, including many 4K models with built-in streaming apps and other smart features. Two LG OLED TVs placed in our Best TVs of 2022 rating: the C1 at No. 2, and the G1 at No. 3. In addition to televisions, LG manufactures a wide range of other appliances, including refrigerators, washing machines, dishwashers, and cooking appliances.

Most of the company’s lower-end TVs use LED screens, while midrange and high-end models use OLED or ONED. Both the C1 and G1 are OLED TVs. (Note that the successors to the C1 and G1, the C2 and G2, were released after we wrote this review. We will analyze the C2 and G2 in a subsequent review.)

The LG C1 is by all accounts an excellent smart TV. Every professional review we looked at mentioned the outstanding contrast ratio of this LG OLED TV, with one reviewer going as far as to call the black levels “perfect.” Reviewers say this 4K smart TV is best in a dark room, where its HDR content looks great with Dolby Vision IQ support. The C1 might struggle in more brightly lit rooms, as it isn’t as bright as some other OLED TVs.

The C1 comes in five size options: 48 inches, 55 inches, 65 inches, 77 inches, and 83 inches. Each model includes four HDMI 2.1 inputs (three on the side, one on the rear), three USB ports, and Apple AirPlay support. Unlike some of the other high-definition (HD) TV sets we’ve reviewed, LG sets run webOS, which some professional reviewers say is a bit sluggish.

Even though the C1 uses a proprietary operating system, it can run apps for major streaming platforms, including Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Disney+, Apple TV+, Hulu, Paramount+, Peacock, HBO Max, and others.

While the glass screen of this OLED TV does make the picture look sharp in dark rooms, professional reviewers note that it also produces some glare if there are lights behind it. Still, the LG C1’s display offers nearly the same functionality and performance as the Sony A90J but for much less money. The C1 has several display modes, including a “filmmaker mode” that is meant to show movies as the moviemakers intended.

And even though the C1 doesn’t use the screen-as-a-speaker technology the A90J does, its virtual (and AI-enhanced) surround sound technology sounds excellent for standard television speakers. Still, most reviewers recommended a soundbar for optimal performance.

The 48-inch LG C1 retails for $1,299.99, the 55-inch for $1,499.99, the 65-inch for $2,299.99, the 77-inch for $3,299.99, and the 83-inch for $5,499.99. These prices are full retail and do not include any promotional sales by the manufacturer or individual retailers.

Professional reviewers note that both the C1 and G1 are excellent OLED TVs. One big difference is that the G1 is intended for wall mounting. Another is that the G1 uses LG’s new Evo OLED panel, allowing for a somewhat brighter HDR picture. But this comes at a price of roughly $700 more for a G1 of a given size than for the equivalent C1. Both are smart TVs with streaming capability, both are good for gaming, and both run the webOS operating system.

Unless you are looking for the best picture possible, professional reviewers recommend that you consider the C1, which offers excellent picture quality at a slight discount. There are also the LG C2 and LG G2, new for 2022, but the C1 or G1 will be a better deal since they’re last year’s models.

The LG C1 and Sony A90J are great TVs, placing No. 1 and No. 2 in our Best TVs of 2022 ratings. Both of these televisions use OLED panels. Professional reviews note that both have outstanding contrast levels and deep blacks, which means excellent HDR performance.

However, the Sony C1 produces an overall brighter picture, making it the best choice for those using their televisions for home entertainment in a bright room. The C1 is the better option if you’re a gamer because it has lower input lag and FreeSync support. That said, if you’re using the PlayStation 5 with your new A90J, the A90J’s G-SYNC support makes it a great choice as well.

The G in the G1 stands for “gallery,” because LG envisions this TV hanging on your wall. Instead of having a stand, LG includes a wall mount in the package – meaning you’ll have to purchase the stand separately. It’s an interesting strategy considering most sets in this price range include a stand, even if they’re meant to be wall mounted.

Reviewers say the G1 is likely the best TV that LG has ever made (although the 2022 G2 improves on that slightly). Reviewers note the picture is as bright as other high-end TVs like the Sony A90J for a somewhat lower price.

The G1 is also incredibly thin. According to the specs on LG’s website, the 77-inch model is less than an inch thick, and smaller models are even thinner. Gamers will also appreciate the G1’s FreeSync support.

However, to make such a thin TV, LG had to cut corners. Reviewers report that the G1’s sound quality is mediocre and that you’ll need a soundbar for better audio quality. However, picture quality is where this television shines. If you’re after the best picture possible without draining your bank account, the G1 should be one of the televisions you consider.

The 55-inch model originally retails for $1,999.99, while the 65-inch retails for $2,799.99. The largest model, the 77-inch, retails for $3,999.99 at launch. LG periodically offers discounts, so check the website for the latest prices.

From a performance standpoint, The LG G1 and the Toshiba Fire TV Edition are different TVs targeting two different types of consumers. The LG G1 is a high-performing OLED with LG’s new Evo technology that produces a brighter picture in HDR. However, according to professional reviews, the Toshiba Fire TV Edition is a basic LED with average picture quality.

We’d only recommend the Toshiba Fire TV Edition for those looking for a budget TV with integrated Alexa and smart home functionality. The picture quality of the G1 is far superior, even if it is considerably more expensive.

According to professional reviews, the LG G1 and Sony A90J are both great OLED TVs, with superb contrast ratios and bright pictures in HDR. However, the G1 is designed to be mounted on a wall, and only a wall mount is included with the package. The Sony A90J includes a stand in the box.

Reviewers say the Sony A90J has a better picture, but not by much. The biggest difference is in sound quality. With the G1, you’ll be underwhelmed – even as LG attempts to address this through AI-enhanced virtual surround sound. With the A90J, Sony’s innovative use of the display panel as a speaker makes a soundbar much less necessary. We’d recommend the A90J if you can afford Sony’s higher prices.

LG’s television warranty covers both parts and labor for one year. An exception exists for OLED screens, which are warrantied for parts in years two through five. The customer is responsible for labor costs, however.

When ordering from LG, the company accepts return requests 15 days after delivery. However, customers must report any shipping or delivery discrepancies or issues such as damage within five days to be eligible for a full refund. Returns of undamaged and non-defective products are subject to an 8% restocking fee.

If you purchase your television from one of LG’s retail partners, you’ll need to inquire with those retailers about their return policies as they are likely different from buying through LG directly.
