LG’s Upcoming Ultrawide OLED Gaming Monitors Have a 5K2K Resolution

Ahead of CES 2025, LG Electronics today announced a new lineup of ultrawide OLED gaming monitors featuring a ‘5K2K’ resolution and other advanced features.

The new LG UltraGear GX9 series comprises three monitors (model numbers 45GX990A, 45GX950A, and 39GX90SA) featuring curved WOLED panels. WOLED refers to White OLED, where the panel emits white light which passes through color filters instead of producing colors directly. The company says this results in a higher brightness compared to standard OLED panels, as well as more vivid colors, truer blacks, and optimized curvature.

The 45-inch 45GX990A and 45GX950A immerse you in action with their wide 21:9 aspect ratio and a 5K2K resolution of 5120 x 2160 pixels. This offers the same height as 4K monitors, with more horizontal space for content. “With generous screen real estate, these monitors are a great choice not only for gaming but for various different uses,” LG says.

The 45GX990A bends to a 900R curvature and boasts a response time of just 0.03 milliseconds, making it ideal for immersive and fast-paced action games. Meanwhile, the 45GX950A has a fixed 800R curved panel that doesn’t bend but offers slim bezels, a sharpness of 125 pixels per inch, and an RGWB subpixel layout for better text legibility.

The 45GX990A and 45GX950A are equipped with DisplayPort 2.1 and HDMI 2.1 ports and USB-C with 90W power delivery to power your laptop. They support variable refresh rates and are certified for NVIDIA G-SYNC and AMD FreeSync Premium Pro technologies.

Both models include LG’s updated Dual-Mode capability for adjusting resolutions, refresh rates, picture dimensions, and aspect ratios. Built-in presets let you switch between the 21:9 and 16:9 aspect ratios and 39, 34, and 27-inch canvases. “With eight configurations, users can personalize their gaming setups to suit their preferences or adapt to different game genres, including FPS, RPG, MOBA, and racing simulators,” LG says.

These upcoming monitors promise to reduce eye strain during extended gaming sessions at night because they’re certified for low blue light emissions. Blue light emitted by various screens influences your circadian rhythm which regulates your sleep cycle. Glasses with a special filter can help reduce blue light exposure, but having it built into a monitor is certainly a nice perk. The monitors are also equipped with an anti-reflective coating to reduce glare. Another way to reduce glare is bias lighting that illuminates the room by casting gorgeous color gradients on the wall behind the monitor.

Lastly, the new UltraGear 39GX90SA OLED gaming monitor brings a 39-inch panel sporting a 21:9 aspect ratio and a curvature of 800R. Thanks to its built-in USB-C ports, the 39GX90SA is also your mini USB-C hub. The 39GX90SA runs the webOS operating system (found in LG’s OLED televisions) that provides built-in entertainment features and popular streaming apps, so you don’t have to use a standalone streaming box like Google TV or Apple TV.

The company did not reveal pricing or availability information for the upcoming LG UltraGear GX9 monitors, but more information will likely be revealed at CES 2025 in January.
