Lululemon Mirror Review: Is It Worth It?

Workout mirrors have skyrocketed in popularity in recent years thanks to their aesthetics and their ability to give you a full body workout without the need to visit the gym — or squint to see instructors on your smartphone or tablet. When turned off, these sleek pieces of workout equipment look just like any other full-length mirror in your home.

The Mirror was one of the first workout mirrors on the market, innovating way before many of its competitors entered the space. Now owned by fitness brand lululemon, the Mirror is rebranding and evolving its platform to bring even more workout content and fitness classes (10,000 to be exact) as the lululemon Studio Mirror.

Over the course of the past three years, the Good Housekeeping Institute‘s fitness experts have logged hundreds of hours testing the Mirror, and we recently got a first look at the new and improved lululemon Studio Mirror to actively test its updated platform offerings. What is the lululemon Studio Mirror?

The lululemon Studio Mirror is a high-end workout mirror with a 43″ full high-definition display that essentially functions as a personal trainer and boutique fitness studio. You’ll be able to work out with top-rated instructors and experience popular fitness classes without having to leave your home.

What makes lululemon Studio Mirror unique from other workout mirrors is that you’ll have access to exclusive classes including AARMY, Y7 Studio, DOGPOUND, FORWARD__Space, Pure Barre, Rumble, AKT and YogaSix. You’ll find everything from dance fitness and cardio-based classes to strength training workouts, yoga, meditation and more on the platform.

“It takes up very little space and has a very small footprint,” says Laurie Jennings, the Good Housekeeping Institute’s general manager, who has been regularly using the Mirror since 2019. “I love that it can integrate seamlessly into any room — when it’s turned off it looks just like a regular wall mirror,” she says. “It doesn’t scream ‘home gym.’ But when I turn it on and pair it to my phone, I’ve got a full-service fitness studio right in the middle of my living room.”

How much does the lululemon Studio Mirror Cost?

The base model lululemon Studio Mirror starts at $1,495, but lululemon is offering $700 off the device with free shipping through 11/21 with code LLSTUDIO700 which brings the cost down to $795. If you’re looking for a complete home gym set-up, you can purchase one of the premium packages at a higher cost that includes the lululemon Studio Mirror plus a variety of equipment such as weights, a yoga mat, yoga blocks, a foam roller and more.

In order to access the content on the mirror, you’ll have to pay an additional cost of $39 per month for the lululemon Studio Membership. The monthly fee also includes some great perks, like 10% off all lululemon purchases, discounts if you want to attend in-person classes at lululemon Studio partner locations and more.

Ordering and Delivery

After ordering directly from the lululemon site, delivery averages 7 to 14 business days. To evaluate the current delivery and ordering process, we had a tester order a brand-new lululemon Studio Mirror and had another tester upgrade to the current lululemon Studio version.

Both delivery experiences went smoothly; a live representative contacted our testers to schedule and confirm the deliveries, and then they also received automated follow-up calls and reminder emails. We also like that you get immediate access to the lululemon Studio app library on your phone or tablet right after ordering, so you don’t need to wait until the equipment arrives to take advantage of the offerings (the membership charge doesn’t start until your Mirror gets delivered).

“The Mirror itself itself is quite heavy, so it’s not easy to move around between rooms,” says Laurie. “I have mine leaning against the wall of my living room, since I didn’t want to permanently install it. But once you choose a spot for it, I’d say it’s probably a better idea to permanently affix it to the wall.” Laurie also recommends holding on to the original box and packaging if you know you’ll want to move it in the future.

Set-up

Once you determine whether or not you want to mount the mirror or let it lay against the wall, you’ll plug it in then pair the mirror with your Wi-Fi and connect it to your phone, download the lululemon Studio Mirror app (compatible with iOS and Android) and follow the steps to sync your device.

You can’t control the lululemon Studio Mirror via touchscreen; instead you’ll use the app to control it. You can pair the device with Bluetooth speakers, headphones, heart rate monitors, Apple watches and Android Wear OS watches. The mirror itself weighs about 70 pounds and the dimensions are 56″ H x 22.4″ W x 1.4″ D.

If you’re upgrading your current Mirror to the lululemon Studio version, the switch is pretty simple: You don’t need any new equipment, as it’s more of a software update type of change. “I didn’t even need to download a new app,” says Laurie. “It had already switched over. I just needed to let the software update on the Mirror itself. That took about 15 minutes and it was ready to go — with tons of new classes, better music and better graphics.”

The Workouts

The lululemon Studio Mirror offers over 10,000 fitness classes, giving you tons of options across practically all domains of fitness. The massive library gives you ability to cross-train so you can stay in shape without getting bored. “I love all the new studio partners, like AARMY and Pure Barre,” Laurie says, adding that there’s so much more variety now and something for every fitness level. “You can do an energizing 15-minute quickie in the morning and wind down at night with a guided meditation,” she says.

Here’s a brief overview of the different class partners available on lululemon Studio:

  • AARMY: Founded by Akin Akkman, AARMY offers bootcamp classes and more.
  • Rumble: Each 45-minute class focuses on boxing and strength training, powering through 10 rounds that alternate between boxing combinations and resistance exercises.
  • Dogpound: This brand specializes in strength, cardio, boxing, kettlebells, bodybuilding and more to help you reach your personal fitness goals.
  • AKT: This full body workout integrates HIIT into different types of classes.
  • Forward Space: Founded by choreographer Kristin Sudeikis, these musically driven, dance-based classes are perfect for all levels.
  • Pure Barre: This popular barre studio focuses on low-impact, full-body workouts. The classes are set up for all levels.
  • Y7 Studio: Founded by Sarah Levey, Y7 classes feature energizing yoga flows paired with hip-hop and EDM music.
  • Yoga Six: This full-body yoga practice focuses on improving balance, strength and breath control while also energizing the mind.

Some of the all-star fitness instructors that you’ll now find on the platform include:

  • Hollis Tuttle: Cardio, strength, stretch, running
  • Gerren Liles: Cardio, strength
  • Julie Sanchez: Dance cardio, barre, Pilates, toning, pre/postnatal workouts
  • Armond Jordan: Kickboxing, boxing, cardio, strength
  • Lance Parker: Cardio and strength, total body strength, Tai Chi, running
  • Patricia Sabulis: Yoga, Pilates, meditation
  • Ashtain Rothchild: Barre, cardio, hip hop dance, strength, boxing
  • Pilin Anice: Yoga, meditation, barre
  • Lonnie Poupard: Cardio, strength, toning, Latin dance, ballet
  • Rachel Nicks: Yoga, barre, Pilates, toning, pre/postnatal workouts, meditation, cardio strength
  • Xtina Jensen: Barre, boxing, cardio, dance, strength, stretch
  • Katie Bergstrom: Yoga, cardio, strength
  • Amanda (Robinson) Baxter: Dance cardio/hip hop, barre, toning, cardio
  • Chris Ryan: Strength, cardio
  • Deja Riley: Cardio, strength, dance cardio, boxing, kickboxing

We found the workouts to be energizing, fun and effective. You can design your own personalized weekly program, and if you want to go to the next level, you can hire a certified trainer for a private session for an extra fee. The two-way audio and video technology makes it possible to receive expert feedback in real-time, including form corrections and motivation. “If you’re worried about privacy, the camera has a physical privacy cover for added peace of mind,” says Rachel Rothman, the chief technologist and executive technical director for the Good Housekeeping Institute.

Our testers also appreciated a new feature that helps you track your progress over time. “The app has a new health score feature that will help you track your fitness levels over time,” Laurie says. “You get a score at the end of every workout, so you can track your progress over time, but also how much you put into any given session.” One frustration, though: You have to choose a single goal, whether it be flexibility, weight loss, strength, toning or something else. “My goal is all of the above, but I am forced to only choose one option,” says Laurie.

Also of note: Although there is a large amount of bodyweight classes, many require equipment; you can either use what you already have hand or you’ll need to purchase equipment from lululemon for an additional fee. You can order equipment with your lululemon Studio Mirror, but it comes at an additional cost.

How does the lululemon Studio Mirror compare to other fitness mirrors?

In terms of aesthetics, we think the Mirror is one of the better-looking units we’ve reviewed, with a slim profile and sleek metal accents. In terms of the quality and volume of classes, we think the Mirror platform also surpasses its competitors.

One downside is that the Mirror doesn’t have touchscreen controls, so you’ll need to control it via the app on your smartphone or tablet. Some may appreciate that you won’t get sweaty fingerprints all over the device, but we thought it felt counterproductive to use controls on another device when you have the Mirror right in front of you.

In order to strength train with this platform you’ll need additional equipment, whereas some competitors include arms and attachments built in to the workout mirror itself. The lululemon Studio Mirror also does not provide storage for equipment, like some of its competitors do, so if you purchase one of the larger packages that includes equipment, you’ll need to find a place to store it.

Is the lululemon Studio Mirror worth it?

You’ll want to consider the cost of the Mirror, the monthly membership cost and the dimensions (to make sure it fits in your home). Ultimately, we think the device is stylish and upscale in appearance and offers high-quality fitness programming, in addition to a large volume of content for all fitness levels. The variety of popular classes and stellar lineup of instructors is noteworthy — and the ability to get one-on-one personal training sessions on the platform is also a major benefit. If you’re looking for motivating fitness content and versatility, the lululemon Studio Mirror is for you.

How we tested

In the Good Housekeeping Institute Wellness Lab, we recently tested several of the newest fitness mirror home gyms on the market, applying the same rigorous testing protocol we use with other fitness products, from stationary bikes to folding treadmills.

When testing fitness mirrors, we took into consideration the content of classes, display quality and screen suitability for live and on-demand classes and personal training sessions. Other factors we reviewed included the instructor’s engagement, the production quality of the classes, the image quality and the sound.

In terms of evaluating workouts, we looked at effective sequencing, if there was a robust number of classes available, the variety for cross-training and adequate filters for things like intensity and high- to low-impact levels. Session duration and genre were also important factors we considered, as were organizational partnerships. Safety measures were reviewed and we also considered if the mirrors offered strength assessments and ample form assessments during live training classes.

When it comes to the lululemon Studio Mirror, our experts have tested the Mirror both in our office gym as well as in our staffers’ homes. As the principal tester for this workout mirror, Laurie Jennings has actively used the Mirror for the past three years and experienced its transition to the Studio format.

Since our initial units were delivered a few years ago, we wanted to evaluate the current delivery, installation and set-up process to see if there have been any changes, so we arranged for a unit to be sent to Laurie for evaluation. We’ve had a variety of other staff members use the Mirror, ranging from workout novices to personal trainers and seasoned fitness instructors. We feel that this wide range of backgrounds and fitness abilities provides a well-rounded testing evaluation of the content offered on the lululemon Studio Mirror platform.
