Stable operation of the device requires a hard disk without damaged sectors, otherwise, you need to replace the drive with a new one. This article will tell you about replacing MacBook Pro hard drive, even without minimal knowledge of the portable computer organization. In addition, you will learn about the possibilities to use the old HDD to your advantage.
Instructions for Replacing the Old HDD with a New One without Assistance
First, it is necessary to prepare a work area. Any stable and flat surface covered with a soft cloth is appropriate to avoid damaging the display cover.
You’ll also need a spudger (a spatula-like tool for repairing electronics) or plastic card, and a precision screwdriver to remove the back cover of the MacBook.
You also need to buy a new hard disk drive. It is very important to use OEM components only to repair Apple hardware. Buy spare parts from trusted suppliers to avoid hardware conflicts and incorrect operation of the main components of the device.
Follow our instructions to replace the old HDD with a new one:
- unplug the MacBook Pro from the power outlet to prevent the possibility of a short circuit during operation;
- place the device with the display facing down and remove all mounting screws with a screwdriver;
- use a spudger or plastic card to lift the back cover;
- gently pry up the cover, release it from the locking tabs, and set it aside;
- find the hard disk drive – it is located in the lower right corner of the MacBook Pro and has a sticker with information about HDD characteristics on its surface;
- you need to remove a fixing bar on the inner side by removing two screws that secure it to the MacBook Pro case;
- gently pull up the plastic strip to remove the hard disk drive;
- disconnect the drive from the black bar that is used to connect the HDD to the device.
Install the new hard disk in place of the old one and reassemble the device by following all the previous steps in reverse order.
The old drive can be used as an external disk to store information. This is possible when there are a few damaged sectors only. It is possible to purchase a special case with a USB slot to facilitate HDD installation to the device.
When it comes to storing documents and multimedia files, some damaged sectors do not cause issues. However, such damage prevents the operating system and software from working properly. Therefore, a fully functional device should be used as a boot disk.
