An upcoming untitled Apple TV+ feature documentary will cover elderly free divers known as “Korea’s Mermaids,” or “haenyeo.”
The untitled documentary film features the story of the legendary “haenyeo” of South Korea’s Jeju Island. It is directed by Peabody Award nominee Sue Kim and is the first project hailing from the Apple TV+ partnership with Malala Yousafzai’s Extracurricular.
The film tells the story of elderly free divers known as “Korea’s Mermaids.” These women support the island community of Jeju Island with their work catching seafood off the coast.
The number of women participating, also referred to as “haenyeo,” has dwindled in the past few decades. But a new generation is helping to revive the dangerous lifestyle while fighting to protect the ocean from environmental threats.
It is a co-production between Malala Yousafzai’s Extracurricular and A24. Director Sue Kim is a Peabody Award nominee also known for “The Speed Cubers.”
The untitled documentary will be available to all Apple TV+ subscribers once it is released. A subscription is available for $4.99 per month, or through any tier of the Apple One subscription bundle.
