Max is about to tell password sharers they have to pay more

Streaming services continue to crack down on password sharing. Netflix and Disney+ have both done it recently, and soon Max will join them.

Notices going out soon about password sharing

Earlier this year, Max indicated its intention to take action against password sharing. But nothing ever came of it.

However, now the time has finally come, as CFO said on a recent earnings call that Max will start sending messaging to password sharers in the months ahead.

The content of those messages? That you need to pay more to keep sharing.

Emma Roth writes at The Verge:

Wiedenfels called password sharing “a form of price rises,” as the company is “asking members who have not signed up, or multi-household members to pay a little bit more.”

Apparently, like some of its streaming competitors, Max sees password sharing not altogether as a forbidden practice, but rather one that will require higher-paying subscription prices.

The acknowledgement of ‘multi-household members’ makes clear that Max understands the appeal of, for example, family members not sharing a home having the opportunity to share an account. But it’s unclear exactly what restrictions would be implemented to prevent multi-household sharing from being abused.

In any case, subscribers are likely to find out soon.
