Meta officially starts showing ads on Threads

Meta has officially started testing ads on its Threads micro-blogging social network. The company says this is a “small test” for the time being with a handful of different brands across the United States and Japan.

A report in November said that Meta was aiming to bring ads to Threads sometime in early 2025, and today’s announcement shows the company is right on time. Meta’s goal is to capitalize on the continued growth of Threads amid the fractured text-based social network industry.

In a post on Threads today, Instagram boss Adam Mosseri said that Meta will be “closely monitoring” the feedback from users before scaling

We’re starting a small test for ads on Threads with a handful of brands in the US and Japan. We know there will be plenty of feedback about how we should approach ads, and we are making sure they feel like Threads posts you’d find relevant and interesting. We’ll closely monitoring this test before scaling it more broadly, with the goal of getting ads on Threads to a place where they are as interesting as organic content.

Mosseri didn’t share any further details on how Threads plans to integrate ads. Instagram is known for having a highly-targeted advertising implementation, so I’d expect that same experience to extend to Threads as well.
