Meta has officially joined the competitive world of smartphone video editing with the global release of its new app, Edits. The app is a direct competitor to ByteDance’s very popular CapCut.
Edit’s main purpose seems to be to give Meta a strong position in the short-form video market, but there are a lot of features worth checking out. Edits stands out from other apps in a few key ways. The “Ideas” feature lets users record and organize video concepts, while the “Projects” feature gives them a central place to manage multiple projects at once.
The “Inspirations” tool helps users find and use trending audio, making creating content that aligns with popular sounds easier. Importantly, unlike CapCut’s basic version, Edits lets users export videos without watermarks, which is a big advantage for creators who want professional-looking content.
The app also includes advanced AI-powered tools that go beyond simple editing. The “Animate” feature turns still images into moving videos, while the “Cutouts” tool lets users precisely track and isolate objects in a video. With a green screen feature, timeline editing, and automatic captioning, creators have everything they need to make polished, high-quality videos. The ability to share directly with Instagram and Facebook allows for quicker content distribution.
Beyond just editing, Edits also help creators refine their content strategy. Built-in analytics give users insights into how their videos perform, helping them spot trends and adjust their approach to reach more people and increase engagement. This focus on data is similar to strategies that have worked on other Meta platforms, and it’s not something most other video editing apps offer.
The app is free to download on both iOS and Android, and seems to be taking advantage of TikTok’s uncertainty. This may work because of the uncertainty around TikTok’s future in some countries. Several factors likely drove the decision to create Edits. Earlier this year, CapCut was temporarily removed from U.S. app stores due to concerns about TikTok’s security, which created an opening for Meta. Even though CapCut is now available again, there’s no telling when it will go under once more.
Meta, with its huge user base on Instagram and Facebook, is in a great position to use its existing platforms and audience to promote Edits and draw in a large number of users. The app’s features are designed specifically to appeal to creators who want a powerful and flexible video editing tool.
In the future, Meta plans to add even more features to Edits. Upcoming updates will include AI-powered tools for changing the look and feel of videos, giving creators more ways to customize their content. Improved keyframe animation controls will let users have more precise adjustments, making animations and visual effects even better.

Chromebooks and Android Devices Have a New Video Editor
There are many excellent video editors for Windows, Mac, Linux, and even iPad, but the situation is bleaker on Chromebooks and Android devices. Thankfully, there’s some good news, as LumaFusion has arrived. LumaFusion is a popular multi-track video editor for iPad and iPhone, allowing people to create professional-quality videos on the go. It earned a spot in Apple’s 2021 App Store Awards, and an Android version was announced in February alongside Samsung’s Galaxy Tab S8 series.
There will also be features for getting feedback on drafts, so creators can share their work with others and make improvements before finishing their projects. Meta also plans to grow the app’s library of creative assets, adding more fonts, text animations, transitions, voice effects, filters, sound effects, and music options to give users a wide variety of styles.
By offering a free, easy-to-use video editing app with advanced features and strong ties to Meta’s other platforms, Meta has positioned itself as a real threat to CapCut and other established apps.
