There’s been a lot of talk about the emoji in Windows 11. Microsoft recently posted about them on the Insider Blog, and it looks like the company has dropped its plans to make Windows 11’s emoji look 3D, as the latest ones are flat.
We were very excited about the Windows 11 emoji when Microsoft first showed them off, so we’re definitely disappointed to see that the company has reverted to a more traditional flat design. Granted, at the end of the day, the idea of emoji is to express your emotions, and flat ones will do it just as well as 3D ones. That doesn’t make the change any less disappointing, though.
When asked about the 3D emoji, Brandon LeBlanc, Senior Program Manager on the Windows Insider Program Team, posted on Twitter, saying, “For Windows 11 we’re using the 2D versions.”
When a Twitter user said that Microsoft was scamming them (which is undoubtedly a stretch), LeBlanc responded by saying, “No, they didn’t scam you. You’re exaggerating this a bit. They simply used the wrong graphics. Sorry about that. Will make sure they use the right ones going forward.”
No matter how you look at it, even the flat emoji in Windows 11 are far better than the existing emoji in Windows, so Microsoft is still moving in the right direction.
As far as what happened to the 3D emoji, it’s difficult to say. Microsoft could have realized that making every emoji have a 3D look and feel would take a lot more time than it’s worth, especially with multiple applications needing to show emoji.
Also, it’s hard to be too upset when Microsoft has replaced the standard paperclip emoji with Clippy. Who doesn’t love Clippy?
Microsoft says that “After previewing these with Windows Insiders, we plan to bring these new emoji to everyone on Windows 11 via a future servicing update.”
