You may have read the headline and scratched your head but we promise that this isn’t some badly scheduled April Fool’s Day joke. Microsoft’s newly announced Windows 11 operating system will allow users to access Android apps via the Microsoft Store thanks to the company’s partnership with Amazon which sees the integration of the Amazon App Store.
The inclusion of Android apps via the Amazon App Store in the Microsoft Store is powered by Intel Bridge technology. The Android apps will basically behave like native Windows apps on your computer, able to be added to the taskbar, snapped into place, and even resized.
Microsoft was a little tight with the details on how exactly the integration of the Amazon App Store works and also with any hardware requirements that there might be. While the addition of Android apps to Windows 11 via the Amazon App Store is great news, there remain some unanswered questions such as what happens if the app requires Google Mobile Services to be present in order to function as it normally would on a mobile device.
Will the addition of the Amazon App Store on Windows 11 help Microsoft to negate the threat posed by Chromebooks that have the Google Play Store built in? Who knows, but it’s great news for those that plan to upgrade to Windows 11 on their current computers.
