Motorola recently launched the Moto Edge 40, its latest mid-range offering in its Edge series in India. The device is the successor of the company’s Moto Edge 30 smartphone and brings several improvements over its predecessor.
The Moto Edge 40 is a mid-range device that incorporates a lot of features usually found in premium devices, such as a leather back, OIS and fast charging. In addition to this, it offers a clutter-free UI, something that has become rare these days.
I have been using the Moto Edge 40 smartphone for a few weeks now, and here is my detailed review of the latest mid-range offering from Motorola.
Price and availability
The Moto Edge 40 has been priced at ₹29,999 for the lone 8GB RAM + 256GB internal storage variant. It is available in three colour options – while the Eclipse Black option comes with an acrylic back, the Nebula Green and Lunar Blue colour options come with vegan leather back.
The device is available from Flipkart, Motorola online store and retail stores across the country.

Design and display
The Moto Edge 40 comes with a sleek and lightweight design, making it a great option for users who do not like bulky devices. It is available in two options – an acrylic back or a vegan leather back. I tested the Lunar Green colour variant with a vegan leather back.
The Moto Edge 40 feels premium to hold thanks to the vegan leather back, which also sets it apart from other devices in the segment. The back also prevents fingerprint smudges and dust can be easily wiped using a cloth.
The device comes with a rectangular camera module at the back with large camera cut-outs. It also features the Motorola logo at the back.
On the right side, you get the volume rockers and the power button. On the left side, you get the antenna lines.
On the top, you get Dolby Atmos branding and a microphone. At the bottom, you get the SIM tray, USB Type-C port, microphone and the speaker grille.
Coming to the display, the smartphone comes with a 6.55-inch Full HD+ curved pOLED display with a 144Hz refresh rate and up to 1200 nits brightness. The curved display and the 144Hz refresh rate are usually not found in this price segment, so that is good to have.
I watched a couple of movies and played a few games on the device and the display offered experience. The device comes with HDR10+ support, offering a good visual experience while watching movies and shows. The 1200 nits brightness allows you to view the display clearly in direct sunlight.
Software and performance
The software is one of the areas where the Moto Edge 40 offers both good and bad experiences. It runs on Android 13 out of the box with the company’s My UX and offers a clutter-free UI without any bloatware or intrusive advertisements. While it is not stock, it offers a near-stock experience.Unlike a lot of devices in this segment, you don’t have to worry about pre-installed applications from third parties on the Moto Edge 40.
The smartphone comes with the Moto app pre-installed which lets you customise the theme with different colour schemes and icon shapes. You can also enable up to nine different gestures to quickly access the camera, take a screenshot, unlock the device and more.
Coming to the not-so-good experiences, the device does come with a few bugs, with occasional stutters and app issues. While this can be fixed with an update, the company hasn’t pushed one yet.
The device is powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 8020 chipset and comes with 8GB LPDDR4X RAM and 256GB UFS 3.1 storage. I tried popular titles such as Battlegrounds Mobile India and Asphalt 9 on the device. The device offers a good gaming experience, even with Full HD graphics. Multi-tasking is a breeze and I did not face any issues with the device.
The device is equipped with a 4,600mAh battery with 68W fast charging support and 15W wireless charging support. It is good to see wireless charging support at this price point. The device lasts a day with normal usage but extended gaming session will bring down the battery life
Camera
Coming to the camera department, the Moto Edge 40 is equipped with a dual camera setup at the back, consisting of a 50MP primary camera with OIS and a 13MP ultra-wide-angle camera.
The device is able to capture decent images in daylight conditions, with good details and minimal noise. Portrait images captured with the device turned out decent but edge detection was a hit or a miss.
The images captured in low-light and using the night mode were average, with some images looking washed out.
On the front, the device comes with a 32MP selfie camera. It can capture decent images in good lighting conditions but struggles a bit in low-light.
Verdict
The Moto Edge 40 is a device that comes with a clean user interface. It offers a good display, decent battery life and sturdy performance. The company needs to work a bit to remove some of the bugs and try to improve the camera performance.
Overall, the Moto Edge 40 is a good option if you are looking for a device with a sleek design and balanced performance. If the camera is a priority, the Moto Edge 40 may not be the best device for you.
