How Does The Motorola Razr 50 Ultra Compare To The Samsung Z Flip 5?
The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 came out about a year ago, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be compared to Motorola’s recent effort, especially considering they share a launch price. Let’s talk about what you get with each one.

The Design
As clamshell foldables, there are obviously some similarities between the design of the Razr 50 Ultra and the Z Flip 5. They both have relatively large cover displays, though the Z Flip 5 doesn’t use all of the cover space, giving the cameras an island and then some. The Razr 50 Ultra opts for cutouts to house the camera while utilizing the entire cover.
Motorola has its iconic “M” logo and “Razr” branding on the back panel while Samsung prefers to keep it blank, saving the branding for the spine of the device when completely folded. Both phones are IPX8 certified. Which one you prefer here depends on your personal taste.
The Screens
When it comes to the screens, I’ll say it right away: the Razr 50 Ultra wins in every single category, whether you’re talking about the cover display or the foldable screen. It is bigger by a few inches, gets much brighter, has a higher refresh rate, is an LTPO panel that will benefit your battery life, and gets Dolby Vision. And yes, every single one of those criteria can be applied when comparing the cover or inner screens. Motorola wins this one.
The Chipsets And Memory
The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 used the top-of-the-line chip at the time it was released, which was the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2. The Motorola Razr 50 Ultra uses a 2024 chip, which is the Snapdragon 8s Gen 3. The 8s Gen 3 is inferior to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, but comparing it to the 8 Gen 2 is a lot more level.
According to benchmarks done by Gizmochina using Geekbench, the 8s Gen 3 wins on single-core performance and the 8 Gen 2 takes it on multi-core, but each only beats the other by a slight margin. AnTuTu puts both the CPU and GPU performance of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 over the 8s Gen 3 though.
When it comes to memory, Samsung’s entry only has 8GB of RAM, while you can get the Razr with 8 or 12GB of RAM. They both share 256GB or 512GB storage options though, both with UFS 4.0 storage. Based on the strength of the better processor majorly, the Motorola wins though, but only slightly.
The Cameras
I always say that you can’t properly compare cameras on paper, but you can get a semblance of an idea of how they shoot against each other. The Razr 50 Ultra wins this with its 50MP wide + 50MP 2x telephoto rear setup, which goes against a 12MP wide + 12MP ultrawide setup on the Z Flip 5.
The same remains true for the selfie camera setup, as the Z Flip makes do with a 10MP front camera while the Razr 50 Ultra can boast a 32MP sensor.
The Batteries And Charging
The Z Flip 5 has a 3,700 mAh battery, which is certainly small by modern standards, with 25W fast wired charging. However, the Razr 50 Ultra comes yet again (noticing a pattern) and beats it out of the water with a 4,000 mAh battery and 45W wired charging.
Both phones support 15W wireless charging at least, and with the Samsung, you get reverse wireless charging. The Razr opts for reverse wired charging.
The Pricing, And Which Should You Get
Both devices launched at $999, though considering that the Z Flip 5 is about to get a younger brother, it can be gotten for a lot cheaper — about $850 on Amazon for the higher-specced 512GB model, which isn’t bad.
However, you must have seen it coming, but the Razr 50 Ultra is certainly the better buy as things stand, considering it beats the Z Flip 5 in essentially every category besides price. However, for those who feel it’s not a fair fight, I’ll be eager to put the Razr 50 Ultra against the Z Flip 6 in about a week.
