Following Severance’s success, Apple TV+ has been rolling out compelling new shows one after another. And coming soon is Murderbot, a new sci-fi dark comedy that could be one of the best yet based on its just-released trailer.
Murderbot trailer arrives ahead of Apple TV+ debut next month
Murderbot is a genre-defying series that’s part sci-fi, part workplace comedy, with some action thrown in for fun.
The show premieres on Apple TV+ on Friday, May 16 with its first two episodes, followed by weekly drops through July 11.
Here’s Apple’s summary of the show:
Based on Martha Wells’ bestselling Hugo and Nebula Award-winning book series “The Murderbot Diaries,” “Murderbot” is a sci-fi thriller/comedy about a self-hacking security construct who is horrified by human emotion yet drawn to its vulnerable clients. Played by Skarsgård, Murderbot must hide its free will and complete a dangerous assignment when all it really wants is to be left alone to watch futuristic soap operas and figure out its place in the universe.
The first trailer just released, and it looks like a winner.
High hopes for a lengthy Murderbot run on Apple TV+
This first season of Murderbot is based entirely on the first book in Martha Wells’ series, All Systems Red, which you can pick up on Apple Books.
If the show proves successful, there are many additional books to serve as source material for future seasons.
Having read the first Murderbot Diaries book, I was a little unsure how well it would translate to a TV show—partly for tone and genre reasons, and also the series’ first-person voice.
But based on this two-minute preview at least, Apple looks like it’s made a compelling adaptation. I can’t wait for next month.

Apple TV+ is available for $9.99 per month and features hit TV shows and movies like Ted Lasso, Severance, The Morning Show, Silo, and Shrinking. You can also watch free in several ways.
