Apple is already making controversial iPhone changes in 2022, but now new information has revealed a shocking new iPhone design decision which may prove even more divisive.
In an exclusive report, remarkably accurate industry insider Ross Young has revealed that Apple has “pushed” plans for a redesigned third-generation iPhone SE back to 2024. Moreover, the company’s plans for the next iPhone SE, which launches in early 2022, are now frustrating and confusing.
New iPhone Frustration
The frustration stems from Young’s report that Apple has now decided to reuse the 2017 iPhone 8 design (itself based on the 2014 iPhone 6) for the 2022 iPhone SE. Externally, nothing appears to be improving with the same large top and bottom bezels, a 4.7-inch display and an LCD panel. Which leads us to…
Needless iPhone Confusion
As for the confusion, despite the lack of design or size changes, Young states that Apple will rename the 2022 model ‘iPhone SE Plus’. This seems like a terrible decision. For four generations, Apple conditioned customers that ‘Plus’ refers to size (specifically its larger 5.5-inch iPhones).
So what deems the third generation iPhone SE worthy of the Plus moniker? 5G. Yes, really. The addition aligns with an earlier report from superstar analyst Ming-Chi Kuo that Apple sees 5G as a priority for all its new iPhones but I’m not convinced the average iPhone SE buyer would agree. Especially as the 2022 iPhone SE is understood to be more expensive. Questions also have to be raised about its potential impact on battery life in such a small chassis.
Consequently, both externally and internally the new iPhone SE is a shock. Apple’s habit of only upgrading the handset every two years also means its design will be a decade old by the time the company finally makes significant changes. In this light, maybe Apple’s pill-shaped iPhone 14 display isn’t so bad afterall.
