New Apple Studio Display: Three reasons to expect a launch this year

Apple has a huge year ahead with 20+ new products launching. One product we haven’t heard a lot about is an upgraded Studio Display, but there are at least three reasons to believe Apple has a new model coming in 2025.

#1: New Studio Display pairs perfectly with Mac Studio launch

The first Apple Studio Display launched in March 2022, right alongside the first ever Mac Studio.

It’s right there in the name: Studio Display and Mac Studio. These two products were made for each other.

Reports indicate that an M4 Mac Studio is launching by this summer, very likely at WWDC.

Does that automatically mean a new Studio Display will debut alongside it? No, but the timing works very nicely. Especially when considering my next two reasons.

#2: Ming-Chi Kuo predicted 2025 launch

Studio Display

Supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo is one of the most prolific sources of Apple leaks. And the last time he commented on a new Studio Display, he indicated a launch would come in 2025.

That was back in April 2023. But much more recently, in September 2024, Kuo shared there there were no updates yet to his original report.

In other words, 2025 is still very much in the cards for Apple’s new Studio Display.

#3: New features align with other planned Apple launches

Lastly, there have been two prior reports about the new Studio Display that align with features we’re expecting from other 2025 Apple launches.

In July 2023, Mark Gurman reported that Apple was working on a new monitor with a unique added feature. He said it would double as a smart home display when idle.

Sound familiar?

Apple’s launching a new smart home product, which I’m calling ‘HomePad,’ some time this spring. It will be a smart display and run a new OS designed for those purposes.

In other words, Apple’s new HomePad could set the stage for an upgraded Studio Display that boasts at least some of the same functionality.

Second, just a couple months ago an anonymous source told the Upgrade podcast that Apple was working on new 90Hz panels for an M3 iPad Air, new iMac, and ‘a next-gen Studio Display.’

Like the HomePad, a new iPad Air is also expected to launch this spring. If it does indeed feature a 90Hz panel, it would make sense for that same tech to hit the new Studio Display later in the year.

New Studio Display: wrap-up

Overall, there’s a growing amount of evidence that a new Apple Studio Display will debut this year. The one thing giving me pause is that Mark Gurman didn’t mention the monitor in his recent overview of Apple’s 2025 products.

Absence from one report, however, doesn’t mean it’s not coming. More likely, Gurman doesn’t have enough info one way or another to make a definitive statement.

Otherwise, with a new Mac Studio and Mac Pro on the way, the time seems right for an upgraded Studio Display.

Do you think Apple will launch a new Studio Display this year? Why or why not? Let us know in the comments.
