Apple may not have revealed the larger MacBook Pro laptops at its October flurry of press releases. Yet new details show that the powerful laptops that many are waiting for should be worth wait… if their biggest concern is the pure utility of power.

The details of the upgrade to the Apple Silicon chipsets at the heart of the MacBook platform will feel comfortable to many. Following the inexplicable 13-inch MacBook Pro picking up the new M2 chip, the actual redesigned MacBook Pros – the 14-inch and 16-inch models – will receive far more power in its chips.

Just as the introduction of the new generation saw the M1 pick up a refresh and transformation into the M1 Pro and M1 Ultra, so the next generation will pick up the M2 Pro and M2 Ultra. Mark Gurman for Bloomberg notes:
“I’m told that these laptops [the new 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros] will come in M2 Pro and M2 Max configurations. The M2 Max will have 12 CPU cores—made up of 8 performance cores and 4 efficiency cores—and 38 graphics cores. It will also continue to come with up to 64 gigabytes of memory. Those options will be available across both screen sizes.”
This is going to be catnip to many of the geekerati that covet nothing but the biggest numbers in the laptop they use to browse social media and edit short videos for TikTok and YouTube. The MacBook Pro laptops with the M2 Pro and M2 Ultra are designed as, well, professional machines for processor-intensive tasks.

With the Intel-based Macs of old, consumers needed to step up to the faster chipsets in the MacBook Pro to be creative. Thanks to Apple Silicon lifting the baseline, MacBook Air delivers more than enough performance for day-to-day use.
Given that, it’s not surprising that Apple is pushing the MacBook Pro further up the portfolio to offer an excess of power to those that demand more from their laptop or just lust over a bigger number.,
