Next up on Google’s kill list is Android Things

Having killed off Google Play Music and preparing to kick Cloud Print to the curb by December 31st, Google has found time to announce the upcoming demise of Android Things, its lightweight OS for smart displays and speakers that launched as Brillo back in 2015. Google will begin shutting down Android Things from January 5th, 2021, and has posted a FAQ for developers.

The January 5th date will see Google cease accepting new non-commercial projects through the Android Things console, with the platform shutting down entirely exactly one year later. This means that new projects using the NXP i.MX7D and Raspberry Pi 3b devices will not be accepted, although OTA updates via the Android Things Console will be possible until the final cut off date of January 5th, 2022.

Android Things was never actually used on a consumer device with Google choosing to use the Google Cast platform on its smart speakers and displays. You can check out the FAQ of the announcement via the link below.

He’s been an Android fan ever since owning an HTC Hero, with the Dell Streak being his first phablet. He currently carries an OPPO Find X2 Pro in his pockets, a Galaxy Tab S5e in his backpack, and thinks nothing of lugging a 17-inch laptop around the world. When not immersed in the world of Android and gadgets, he’s an avid sports fan, and like all South Africans, he loves a good Braai (BBQ).
