Nothing confirms that the US is getting nothing – at least for now

It seems that its bad news for those in the US waiting on the launch of Nothing’s Phone (1) in mid-July because it has now been confirmed that the brand will skip the North American market in its entirety. Serial leaker, Evan Blass, first alluded to Nothing choosing not to launch the Phone (1) in the US and Canada and now, unfortunately, Carl Pei’s company has confirmed this. Although it says that it has ‘big plans’ to do so in the future.

Blass first discovered that the Nothing phone wouldn’t be ‘fully supported’ in North America on the StockX website which is auctioning the first 100 units of the Phone (1).

Disclaimer: Nothing phone (1) is not fully supported in North America. Functionality may be impacted depending on your carrier, coverage, speed and/or reliability; or it may not function at all. Purchase is not available for customers living in Mexico and South Korea.

This was later confirmed to PCMag by Nothing with the following statement:

“While we’d love to bring phone (1) to the entire community around the world, we’re focusing on home markets, including the UK and Europe, where we have strong partnerships with leading local carriers. It takes a lot to launch a smartphone as you know, from ensuring the handset is supported by the country’s cellular technologies to carrier partnerships and local regulation, and as we’re still a young brand we need to be strategic about it.”

Whether it’s down to not having enough resources to get the Phone (1) certified or indeed, carrier by US carriers, or it may also be down to Nothing trying not to spread itself too thin with its first smartphone or any permutation thereof. Whatever the reason, Nothing fans in the US will need to wait for a future release.

Even if you get your hands on a Phone (1), it will not be capable of voice-over-4G on AT&T and will experience “unpredictable” coverage on T-Mobile. As for Verizon, it will have no service, period. So it’s a rather mixed bag in terms of carrier support in the US which makes the Phone (1) something of a non-starter unless Nothing can pull something out of the bag in the lead up to the July 12th launch, which they don’t appear to be too optimistic about.
