Nothing Teases Its Phone (2a) Plus For The End Of July

July is certainly going to end as one of the busiest months for smartphones in 2024 if not the absolute busiest (we’ll check back again at the end of the year). CMF by Nothing was among the brands launching this month, and it came with its debut device, the CMF Phone 1, which is a surprisingly great budget option.

The spotlight is going to switch back over to Nothing for the rest of the month, as the company seems set on planning a sibling for its Nothing Phone 2a which was launched back in March. This is official, as the company revealed this via a teaser post on its social media platforms.

The Nothing Phone (2a) Plus Is An Enigma And A Surprise Too

I consider myself to be one of those people who frequently has my ear to the ground when it comes to smartphone news, but I’ll admit a shortcoming here. I knew nothing about the existence of the upcoming Nothing Phone 2a Plus until the company’s teaser. Perhaps that’s not my bad and they managed to keep it under wraps all this time, but I’m certain this is the first that most people are hearing of this smartphone.

Nothing has given us nothing regarding the device itself, so there’s nothing that we can do beyond speculation, but speculate we will. Under normal circumstances, a “Plus” smartphone is larger than the regular model that it comes alongside. That’d be an easy conclusion to reach for this phone, but the thing is, the Nothing Phone 2a is already rocking a screen with a 6.7-inch diagonal, and even if that’s bumped up to 6.8 inches (which seems to be the unofficially agreed-upon limit), an extra tenth of an inch is not worth the “Plus” moniker.

Here’s where I’ll have to bring my A-game in conjecture. The tagline of the teaser post is “Plus. More. Extra.”, so it seems more likely that the device will somehow bring more in terms of increasing certain specs or perhaps including features that were non-existent in the original budget model. My best guess would be the addition of wireless charging, a bigger battery, and/or a faster processor. I really doubt any major changes to the dimensions of the device (beyond thickness) considering this is only following the Phone 2a by four months.

This Is Likely A Way To Keep The Steam Going With Nothing’s Budget Phone

The Nothing Phone 2a was received pretty well. Nothing’s phones are generally not the most expensive in the market but bring compelling designs and fantastic software; the budget Phone 2a stuck to that philosophy even at a lower price point.

Expected on July 31st, the Nothing Phone 2a Plus is following the original act rather quickly, and while it will have its own show, it’ll also bring some attention to the original Phone 2a — which has already gotten two new colorways post-launch. I also expect it to target the same lower midrange segment, though slightly more expensive.

I’m eager to see how well this device will be received. I’m going to be ready to scrutinize its spec sheet and debate whether it even needs to exist or not. Thankfully, I won’t need to wait long before I have fun with it; unlike the Nothing Phone 3.
