Nothing held its ‘The Truth’ live stream event a short while ago where it revealed its plans for 2022 which happen to include the launch of its first-ever smartphone. The Phone (1), as it’s called, is scheduled to launch during summer 2022 and will run on, you guessed it, Nothing OS.
As per previous rumors, the Phone (1) will be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon mobile platform although no specific chipsets were mentioned during the live stream.
Nothing says that its Nothing OS will feature 40% fewer pre-installed apps, be smooth and fast, and take the best of stock Android. The Phone (1) will receive 3 years of OS upgrades and 4 years of security updates. You can expect custom widgets that follow Nothing’s design language which takes inspiration from the dot matrix, as you can see from the slideshow above.
“Nothing OS captures the best features of pure Android, distilling the operating system to just the essentials, where every byte has a purpose. It is designed to deliver a fast, smooth and personal experience. A coherent interface, the hardware seamlessly integrates with software through bespoke fonts, colours, graphical elements and sounds. A first preview of Nothing OS will be available via its launcher that will be available to download on select smartphone models from April.”
Nothing CEO and founder, Carl Pei, says the company will launch a fresh $10 million round of community investment so this its supporters will get the chance to be part of the journey. Nothing has already raised $140 million of capital which it says will be the ‘rocket fuel’ for its continued growth.
In terms of the Phone (1), little is actually known. We don’t know which Snapdragon chip will power it, how many megapixels its cameras will have, nor the size of its battery, or how fast it might charge. What we do know is that Nothing’s Phone (1) is the company’s first step towards developing a new Android ecosystem that doesn’t trap users into one single brand.
Carl Pei promises to reveal further details in the months ahead, including news on the community-driven investment round.
