Now With Mild-Hybrid Tech And Upgraded Cabin

A life-cycle impulse update is what BMW calls a facelift, and since both the 4 Series Coupe and Convertible models received a major update for 2025, it stands to reason that the 4 Series Gran Coupe and its electric sibling would be next in line. Although the base engine in the new 4 Series Gran Coupe is the same as the one on the outgoing 430i Gran Coupe, it gains 48V mild-hybrid tech for improved efficiency. At the top of the range, however, the M440i Gran Coupe models get a new version of the 3.0-liter six-cylinder with MHEV technology, improving outputs to 386 horsepower and 398 lb-ft of torque. This means quicker acceleration and less money spent at the pumps – and that’s not all. Updates to the the interior and exterior of the 2025 4 Series Gran Coupe lineup strive to make it even more alluring for those who want to combine the practicality of four doors with the swoopy styling of a coupe.

When Is The 2025 BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe Coming Out?

Though the refreshed 4 Series Coupe and Convertible models are already on sale, BMW’s release date for the 2025 4 Series Gran Coupe will be towards the end of the year, considering production commences in July 2024. We hope it’ll be at dealerships in the USA before 2024 draws to a close.

2025 BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe Estimated Price and Competition

BMW has not yet announced the price of the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe, but using the updated 2025 coupe and convertible models as a guide, we can expect the Gran Coupe versions to cost closer to $50k for 2025 at the entry point to the range. xDrive models may go for $52k, while the M440i trims could increase by around $3,000. We expect the MSRPs to lift to around $64,000 with RWD and $66,000 with xDrive AWD.

There aren’t too many rivals in this neck of the woods, with only Audi producing something similar in the form of the A5 Sportback. The four-ringed coupe-style four-door has a starting MSRP of just $46,200 for the entry-level trim, but will cost more than $57k at the top end of the lineup with the 261-hp 45 TFSI engine. More conventionally proportioned cars, such as the Mercedes-Benz C-Class and Genesis G70, would also likely land on shoppers’ shortlists.

New BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe Exterior and Colors

The exterior of the 2025 4 Series Grand Coupe benefits from similar updates that we saw on the Coupe and Convertible lineups. This includes new slimmer headlight designs – upgraded to new all-LED units with welcome lights and arrow-shaped DRLs/turn signals – updated taillights, and a refreshed grille design. The full-height grille now comes with a matte chrome surround. The air intakes now feature a mesh structure finished in Quartz Silver. On the M440i, it has a gloss-black surround, horizontal grille bars, and an M logo. The taillights adopt the new BMW Laserlight tech, where illuminated glass-fiber bundles produce a 3D lighting effect, though this feature is standard only on the M440i or part of the optional Shadowline package. Adaptive LED headlights are standard on the M440i but optional lower down in the range.

The palette of exterior colors for the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe has been expanded for 2025, with two new hues added to the palette – Vegas Red and Cape York Green. There are also new wheel designs, with 19- or 20-inch bi-color M Aero whees available with the M Sport package.

The M Sport package also comes with different bumpers incorporating large side air intakes in front and a gloss-black diffuser element in the rear, while the exhaust tips are now four inches in diameter and integrated into the rear apron – and finished in gloss-black if you specify the Shadowline package as well. An M Carbon exterior package is an available option, rendering in carbon-fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) the front side air-intake trim, M mirror caps, decklid spoiler, and rear diffuser insert.

BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe Expected Dimensions

The exterior dimensions of the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe are not expected to change by much, with the tweaks to the front and rear bumpers potentially affecting length by small margin. The dimensions of the existing models should thus carry over, and look as follows:

2024 BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe Dimensions

Wheelbase

112.4 inches

Length

188.5 inches

Width

72.9 inches

Height

56.8 inches

Curb Weight

3,792 – 4,019 lbs

We do expect curb weight figures to be a little higher due to the addition of the mild-hybrid system.

BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe Engine and Performance

Updates have been made to the powertrain to boost performance and efficiency. The base turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine of the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe 430i retains its outputs of 255 hp and 295 lb-ft, with the benefits from the new 48V mild-hybrid system aimed at improving fuel economy and mid-range punch. These models also get a redesigned intake manifold and combustion chambers also aid efficiency, as does the engine’s ability to now also run the Miller combustion cycle. Despite some possible weight gain, we don’t expect a poorer 0-60 time for the base 4 Series Gran Coupe, and hitting 60 mph should occur in around 5.8 seconds.

The mild-hybrid system is added to the M440i’s turbocharged 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder as well, but this engine sees its specs improve from 382 to 386 horsepower and torque from 369 lb-ft to 398 lb-ft. With xDrive AWD, this powertrain configuration is capable of a 0-60 sprint in just 4.3 seconds (4.7 seconds with RWD), with a top speed limited to 155 mph. All engines come with an eight-speed automatic transmission.

Gas Mileage

The 2025 4 Series Gran Coupe’s gas mileage will improve, thanks to the new mild-hybrid system. On the coupe and convertible 430i four-cylinder models, the improvement in the EPA’s combined cycle proved to be around 2-3 miles per gallon for each of the city/highway/combined cycles, so we’re expecting a similar improvement in the Gran Coupe. A figure of 30-31 mpg combined is possible, depending on the powertrain configuration, up from last year’s 28 mpg.

BMW

On the 4 Series Coupe and Convertible models, the M440i derivatives returned combined figures of 25-27 mpg, which have improved to 28-30 mpg for 2025, so the Gran Coupe should also benefit from an improvement. We’ll update this section once more information is received.

BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe Interior and Cargo

There are some subtle updates to the interior of the BMW 4 Series Gran COupe, too, with a redesigned steering wheel with a polygonal rim and illuminated multi-function buttons and shift paddles. A smaller new gear selector is also used in the new models. Buyers that want to add the optional M Sport package now get a new flat-bottomed sports steering wheel with tri-color stitching and a red stripe at 12 o’clock for their money.

More interior color combinations are also made available, but perforated SensaTec leatherette is the default upholstery on the seats of the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe. Vernasca leather, as always, costs extra, but it’s now also offered in black with Red highlighting, alongside four other color combinations. Newly available trim elements include Fineline Light and Grey Blue Ash open-pore woods, and M Fine brushed aluminum. The automaker has made some effort into making the cabin feel more opulent, so the instrument panel’s SensaTec covering is smoother and softer, and extends to the upper portions of the door cars. A Galvanic finish is also available for the gear selector, iDrive controller, and Stop/Start button.

The other big change inside the new 4 Series Gran Coupe is the use of the latest iDrive infotainment system with QuickSelect for easier menu navigation and a BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant. It relegates all the climate controls to the touchscreen, though these can also be controlled via voice commands. Dual 14.9- and 12.3-inch digital displays form part of the BMW Curved Display screen, and augmented-reality navigation that overlays a camera image to ease navigating tricky intersections forms part of the Live Cockpit Plus option. BMW’s Live Cockpit Professional adds a full-color head-up display and augmented view.

BMW ID personalization through the BMW App will now be easier, too, with signing in to the vehicle, importing a personal profile, and linking a key to it requiring nothing more than scanning a QR code with your smartphone. A personal 5G eSIM is standard, as is Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

None of the changes should make any difference to the cabin’s dimensions, so expect a similarly hemmed-in second row with limited legroom and headroom, as before, with these two metrics translating to 34.9 and 36.6 inches, respectively. The BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe’s trunk space will not be affected by the refresh either, with the same 16.6 cubic feet expected behind the second row. Cargo space can be increased to 45.6 cu-ft by folding the 40/20/40-split rear seats down.
