Nvidia’s RTX 4000 GPUs are among the best graphics cards your money can buy, but AMD’s new lineup of RX 7000 graphics cards are putting some amount of pressure on Nvidia. The latest models to arrive, the RX 7800 XT and the RX 7700 XT, are particularly problematic for the chipmaker, since they’re putting some serious competition performance-wise on one of Nvidia’s most popular cards, the RTX 4070. The immediate effect of that, at least for now, seems to be coming in the form of an across-the-board price reduction for the card.
Usually, the RTX 4070 can be found at a $599 price point — not Nvidia’s cheapest, but also not the most expensive by a long shot. More recently, a pair of third-party cards — the Gigabyte RTX 4070 WindForce OC and the Zotac RTX 4070 Gaming Twin Edge OC — had their prices slashed from $599 to $549 at multiple retailers. Nvidia has yet to announce a pricing change, but the fact that the same exact price reduction happened in two different retailers that have nothing to do with each other indicates that this is not a limited-time deal, but rather an actual price reduction. Several models are still priced at $599, and so is the Founders Edition card on Nvidia’s website, so this is not a widespread thing just yet. But it seems to be happening slowly.
The RX 7800 XT is priced at $499, and the RX 7700 XT is priced at $449. AMD cards have always been priced lower than Nvidia’s competitors, but in this case, the difference seems to be dealing some damage to Nvidia — the global economy is not the best right now and for this specific generation, Nvidia initially opted to price its cards considerably higher than their predecessors.
We remain to see whether it’s widespread, but if you want to get an RTX 4070 at a lower price right now, you can check out both of the cards we mentioned on Newegg (Gigabyte/Zotac) and Amazon (Gigabyte/Zotac). We have reached out to Nvidia for comment, and we’ll update this article if we happen to hear back.
